Art sho w at Orono fair Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 15, 1982, 3 To 1insstan-li water .computer The Region oî Durham is planning a computer- controlled water supply systemn for Whitby and Oshawa area which allows the reduction of Public Works staff by -seventeen employees and a savings to the Region. Although the implementa- tion of the computer- controlled system allows a reduction of staff there will be no layoffs. William Twelvetrees points out there are already 14 vacant posi- tions in public works which have flot been filled following retirements and resignations. Paul McMackin and son enjoy the art show, just one of' many features at the O)rono Fair. Mark, of Peterborough area, "The Optimum in Op- tomists" As the calendar pages turn month after month we have corne to realize that life does have its ups and downs, its tears and laughter, its frustra- tions and glad tidings. It's al part of living with an, em- phasis to pile up "Pluses" greater than the "Minuses." Last~ week we piled on another plus when we met the Optimun In Optomists while we thought we were battling in a field of what appears as hopelessness. It ail came about in the search for some littie ducks for the Orono Fair, Mac- Donald's Farm. After numerous' phone calîs on Wednesday of last week, we were directed to Rusty in the Courtice area who may have what 1 was secking. Now I f ound Rusty a likeable sort of guy and upon asking about the possibility of getting some small ducks for the farm he replied, "Yes, 1 have a hen with 6 small day- old ducks." "Yes, I've visited MacDonald's Farmn at the Orono Fair and Yes, you are welcome to the lien and ducks. " Arrangements were made for me to pick up the ducks on Thursday and afternoon and anything else Icould find that could be of use. 111 So I arrived at Rusty's Thursday afternoon with a couple of boxes and after meeting Rusty we proceeded to the series of small barns where he keeps upwards of 300 rabbits, chickens, pigeons, goats and what have you. What about somne smrall rabbits 1 was asked? There is a good colour range in this pen. So the box for the ducks was filled with rabbits now . estined for the Orono Fair. On our return fromn the car we made conversation of liens hatching duck eggs while ducks are flot able to hatch hen's eggs. We had tried a duck on hen's eggs earlier in the year with no success and were informed by Len Pears, Orono's poultry authority, that it was possibly due to oil on th' d ucks feathers that stop breathing of the forming chick in the egg. Rusty had another view- point and contends that when a duck gets off the eggs it generally returns with, too much water in its feathers and that duck eggs will accept this quantity of water while hen's eggs won' t. By this time we had manouvered our way through a series of shed to reach a hien sitting in the corner under a wooden box. Rusty was as amazed as I when he lifted the hien offithe nest to reveal six duck eggs. Kneeing besideý the nest he l!ooked to say, "They should have hatched last night." "Last Night" was actually some twelve hours after tell- ing me he had a hien and six ducks. Again 1 thought to myself, "Now here is an op- tomist, if 1 ever saw andf one with a lot of confidence in nature." Rusty was undaunted. "',You will have, your ducks and I will bring them to the fair for you." "Are you going to use a hot water bottle to speed up the process"? 1 asked. Sure to his word he arrived at MacDonald's Faim with three little ducks which 1 am sure he had to scurry around the country to get. They could hardly be from that hen under the box as they were more than a day old. The incident was a life for the day and one we will pile Now costs more t'O pass a stopped school bus Stiffer penalites corne into effect Sept. 1, 1982, for motorists who fail to stop for school buses. The Ontario government is increasing the $20 to $100 fine to $100 to $500. Second and subsequent offenders face fines from $250 to $1,000 and/or up to six mon- ths in jail. In addition, drivers will Jose six demerit points instead of four for each conviction. The new legisiation will also include a mandatory stopping distance of 20 mn behind a bus - approximately the length of a tr actor trailer. Remember, traffic going in both directions must stop for a statioriary school bus flashing its red lights. The on- îy exception is on multi-lane highways, with median bar- riers. Then only traffic behind the bus must stop. To further ensure children's safety, as of Sept. 1, 198 3, every school bus car- rying 10 or more passengers' must have a stop-arm device. It's an official stop sign, about 60 cm in dimension, with two flashing red lights, mounted on the left side of each bus, only 1.5 mn from the ground. up on the "Plus" side of the ledger. Here we had a man eager to help and with plenty of faith and optimîsm for the future. I had gained more than the rabbits and the ducks on this outing and as well a chuckle or two to add spice to the day. sy stem 1i1he public works commit- tee has--recommended to council that water plant operations staff could be reduced by two suipervisors, operationis techinician. operating foremnan and thir- teei operaiors or maintenance men. The new computer- controlled system will mean substantial savings in labour costs for the water -depart- ment. When the systema is in place the Region will be able to control the water supply system for the major portion of the southern area of the Region through.the system.
