Two new teachers have been added to the Clarke High faculty. The first, Mrs. Pliva, is taking Mrs. Wood's place for the first semester. The second addition, Mr. McPhee, is taking over part of an over crowded English Class, as well as a Geography Class. Our student's counicil this year is set up in Parliamen- tary style. Our school pictures were -taken on Sept. l3th. Four different packages were of-- fered to the students. The grade 9 initiation was held on Sept. l7th. They had to dress up as such thines as Popeye and Olive Oyl, Mlickey and Minnie Mouse, Pebbles and Bamm Hamm, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, and Wood Woodpecker and his Tree! The graduating grade 12's and 13's had them doing crazy antics in the halls, the cafeteria, as well as an assembly held in honour of the grade 9's. AIl in aIl, it was a day enjoyed by everyone. Also, on the day of initia- tion, the Harrier was held. Winners were: lst Cameron McDonald, 2nd Brett Owens, 3rd- Mr. Jackson. Our house league sports get unde-way this week. Ministry of Community and Social Services (5Ontario Frank Drea, Minister' William Davis, Premier The lotteries angm the Ont. moose hunt Woods, Water and WildIife By: Ron Reid, Federation of Ontario Naturalists The Ontario government's fascination with lotteries has been extended one step fur- ther - this time to moose. Starting next year, each of Ontario's estimnated 60,000 moose hunters will have to trust the luck of the draw for a permit to shoot one of our most magnificently ugly mamnmals. Natural Resources Minister Alan Pope is betting on the lottery system to renew On- tarîo 's moose herd, which now stands at about hall of its potential size of 150-200,000. He has so much confidence in this new management measure that the existing rules restricting party size to three hunters have been dropped, and hun- ting season next year will be open longer. These relaxed rules almost guarantee that the program will be popular with 'hunters, but its effec- tiveness in -rebuilding the mooise herd remains to be seen. Under the new regulations, a hunter will need a special validation tag, drawn by lot- tery in limited numbers, to kilI either a bull or a cow. Hunters without the special tags can still hunt, but can legally shoot only young moose. By making hunters more selective, the program is hoped to reduce the overall harvest. Mr. Pope also announced a renewed crackdown on poaching, with additional conservation officers to be adided to the Mlinistry's bard- pressed enforcemnent staff. As well, the ministry wil be in- creasing efforts to control wolves where predation can be shown to be significantly reducing mfoose populations. It is this last aspect that raises the eyebrows of mi conservationists, fori Ministry bias neyer cari out researchi to establisb t wolves are a serious threat moose in Ontario. Howe', dthe mninister promises that wolf cont roi will be used only wlhere local staff can establish strongly that a problem ex- - ists, and any problems will in- kan y volve no bounties and no the airplane hunting. No doubt, ried naturalîsts across the pro- tbat vince will be watching warily it to to ensure that any wolf con- ver, trol programns are not abused. &Corne And Have Your- THANKSGIVINYG DINNER At The 7S A RESTAU RANT Home Cooked Roast Turk ey & Dressing 4 Includes: Soup, Salad Bar,, Tea or Coffee And For Dessert AOur Homnemade Pumpkin Pie I ~Ail This For Onlv R9 -F--qqur
