This years theme "Lungs at Work" has been chosen to emphasize the importance of lung health im the workplace, At present, 85 percent of job related deaths are attributed to accidents, but new studies indicate that occupation link- ed disease is rising as a cause of death. These occupational diseases include the pneumoconioses <dust diseases), occupational asthma, asbestosis, silicosis, occupational lung cancer and industrial bronchitis. Almost any individual in an industrial process is poten- tially at risk, as are spray painters, a.uto repairmen, meat wrappers, wood workers, regrigeration engineers, printers and firefighters. Stone masons, sand blasters, and workers in the pottery and china in- dustries may have an increas- ed chance of developing silicosis (Caused by long-termn exposure to slica dust), white construction and demolition workers, and those employes in the insulation industry are at increased risk from asbestosis (through long-term exposure to asbestos fibres.) Even the homemaker is not immune to respiratory hazards. The average kitchen cupboard, bathroom cabinet and garden shed all contain a wide variety of substances potentially harmful to the lungs, if used in enclosed spaces or without due regard for personal safety. É)uring Lungs are for Life Week, the Lung Assoication will make available a variety of pamphlets to answer your questions on lung hazards in the comnmuntiy, home and workplace.
