He defended his policies as Minuster of Agriculture and as weil Canagrex Crown Corpora- tion that is now in its third reading iu the House of Com- Mous. Whelan lias headed the Ministry since 1972. The Minister said the Liberals had not created Canagrex, "But I think it is a very good program," he said. He said thebül had run into opposition of late even from members of lis own party. "I do not give up easily," lie said. Whelan said Canagrex is a prograta promote the cx- port of agricultural products ta other countries and would be controlled by a ten- member board, seven -of which would corne fromn the private sector i Canada. Big Brothers receive no of- ficial or structured training, however their role is thoroughly explained ta themn. By workig on a one- to-anc relstionship, the Big Brother is more readily aware of, and able ta meet, the specific needs of thse in- dividual boy. These ac- tivities allow the organization an opportunity to get ac- quainted with the boys on a more personal basis. They also help the boys and Association to- regularly 'keep in touch' with one another. Previously matched Big and Little Brothers are also invited to these func- tions. Past activities have in- cluded a basebail tourna- ment, Winter Carnival Day, and A Christmas Party. The Big Brothers of Newcastle is funded through local donations and the na- tionally held 'Bowl For Milons.' Local Bowmanvilie aud Newcastle alleys donate their lanes for ane week in February for the big event. The week is either preceded~ or foflowed with Celebrity Night. This special evening is intended to invite local celebritiel ta bowl and stimulate interest in Big Brothers, Past donations have totalled four ta five thousand dollars as a resuit of these well advertised events.
