An outstandingpiece, at Campbelcroft Inuit show Farm -Tax reduction One of the outstanding pieces on show at the Inuit carving collection at the Boyd home in rural Hope Township last Sunday was Inuit sh"ow (Continued fromn page 1) of Walrus tusk etching. [n speaking with Elva Reid she stated that the collection was created by some of the best carvers in the north. MI pieces were fromù the reserve carving roomr at'Cape Dorset and selected by Wally Bren7 nais, artistic director of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-op. The carvings represented sanie twenty carvers from the area and the show, stated Elva Reid, was one of the finest. Elva Reid points out that Cape Dorset has a population of 800 Eskimos and some 30 whites, the latter working for the Co-operative, as teachers, as nurses and with the R.C.M.P. 0f tne native population she estimates some thirty to forty are ac- complished carvers creating extremely refined pieces of work. The stone is mined one hundred miles from Cape Dorset with the Eskimos transporting ta stone ta Cape Dorset in small crafts during the summer months. She said they spend the winter carving in their own homes and do flot take instructions in the art and thus ail work does have a native look, feeling and expression. Biva also spoke of the great the above- seal depicting ex- humor of the Eskimos which also states that ai work is cellent fanm and finely is carried over to their carving hand crafted and that polished. andnotes the clapping of the polishing takes days of spit Elva Reid explained the flappers' on this seal. In referring to a-Walrus et- ching in the show, Elva Reid said, it was an extremnely rare piece and very collectible. Reid and Boyd were well pleased with the show and sale with most pieces being sold. Ir. speaking of her trip ta Cape Dorset Elva said it was two-fold i that they did want to assemble an Inuit carving collection and she had always wanted ta visit the north. She states that although there is not a tree it is a magnificent, beautiful country. She sald the colours are overwhelming as the sun slightly dips aven the mountains for a brief period of time during the summer months. The Reid-Boyd visit was during the period of the longest day of the year in the north, a twenty-four hour day. Elva recalîs playing golf at Cape Dorset with tee-off tume, midnight. A visit always ta remnember and recail. The rebates equal 50 percent of the municipal taxes levied on eligible farm assessment. For 1982 there has been a major change in the program and that is that the minimum value of production in order to qualify has been raised from $5,000 to $8,000 in a normal production year. Other eligibility criteria such as residing in Ontario, 50 percent of the taxes been paid on each property, and You own property assessed as a farmn, stili apply. The pro- perty must be farmed or used as part of a farming opera- tion that produces farm pro- ducts wvith a-gross value of $8,000 or more in a normal production year. In 1982, as it was in 1981, the property taxes rebate must bc reported as taxable continue income on your annual in- come tax statemnent. Major changes were also announced recently with regards to propcrty tax on farmland and buildings beginning in 1984. In essence, 100 percent of the property tax on fanm land and farn buildings will be rebated ta the farmer. The farm house and one acre of land will be assessed separately on the samne basis as sîmilar residences in the same coni- munity. We will have further infor- mation on these changes at a later date.
