12, Oronb Weekly Times, Wednesday, Deceinher 1982 McCaffrey speaks to Durham East PCs There's more to the beauty of the arts and culture business in Ontario than meets the eye - $2.5 million more - says Armourdale _M.P.P. Bruce McCaffrey, Minister of Citizenship and Culture. That's how much revenue was generated by tourists visiting cultural attractions such as museums and art galleries last year. Add to that figure the 50,000 full- time jobs created by the ex- istence of those facilities and the fact that tourismn is the se- cond largest industry in On- tario, and the result is a basis for. solid business, said Mc- Caffrey. The minister made the remarks to the annual meeting of the Durham East Progressive Conservative Association held last week in Bowmanville. He was hosted by Sam Cureatz, M.P.P. for Durham East. "Arts and culture is good business for our province and Ontario accounts for two- thirds of ail tourist spending in Canada," McCaffrey stated. And it's a business that's growing by leaps andl bounds. In the last decade, 21 or- chestras have increased to 36; 12 professional theatre com- panies have grown to 40) and the number of art galleries bas increased to 75 from 1l. Those extra facilities mean more visitors, more jobs and more spin of economnic benefits for businesses in their communities, he pointed out. The Ministry of Citizen- ship and Culture was created in February, 1982 from the former Ministry of Culture and Recreation. The ministry bas for its mandate two areas of responsibility: arts, cultural and heritage pro- grains and multi-culturism and citizenship.'1 At the Bowmanville meeting also re-elected Marion Manders of Clarke Township as president of the local Riding Association. Marriane Zakarow was elected, vice- president along with Jim Souch, Oshawa, Guy Hemm- ing, Darlington and Marcia Winning of Orono. Elected secretary, Lorraine Lover, Newcastle and treasurer, Gary Valcour, Oshawa. What a pleasant sur- prise for Saturday morn- ing when Del Moore of the Newcastle Lions walked through the front door with a fist full of twentys. Why, that meant a new pair of skisfor this winter and a littie more ex- travangance in niy Christmas shopping., Certainly there is flot great incentive to invest the funds since everyone has done so much crabing about high interest rates and the rates over the past few montbs have plum- meted to a low level. When it came to noon and the lunch hour of course I was going to be full of news for a change. With mny big mouth 1 made my entrance into the kitchen with the great includes the stuffing. Stujffings can be made in hundreds of wýays and every,,onie bas their own favorite. lThe basic is the ee-oua bread stuffing -a savory blend' of bread cubes, onion, celery and seasonings. If you're looking for a change this year, consider adding chopped apple or dried fr-uits, sausage, mushroomns or nuls. Allow about /to Y4 cup stuf- fing for each 0.5 kg (1 lb) of turkey. Place two-thirds of the stuffing in the body cavity and the remnaining third in the neck cavity. Fair enough. It is near Christmas and surely 1 could spread a little joy at tbis time of the year. 1 explained the cir- cumstances and there was some chatter before 1 was banded a piece of paper which turned out to be the oul bill, $250.12. Why 1 wasn't in the bouse for anymore than five minutes and I 'm in the hole by 12 cents. Furtber wben Del Moore came into the of- fice clutching tbe $500 in one hand he also held bis last four books of Lions Club tickets for a Micro Wave Oven in the other hand. Now what could I say but buy al bis tickets on the Micro Wave, $16.00. I was assured with my luck 1 would certainly pur- chase the winning ticket. With this assurance that the Micro Wave would corne mny way then in return I wanted to assure Del 1 had the winning ticket for the Oddfellow's Turkey draw on the counter. He obliged by purchasing those remain- ing and we came to the conclusion that I baving the Micro wave and he the needed to kil food spoilage bacteria. AND IF 1HAD And if 1 had written this column last week 1 would have also written that the four who go walking on Sunday mornings enter- tained their wives to a pre- winter cook-out at the Dell in the Ganaraska Forest. What a pleasant outing. It was an abbreviated walk but did include somne trail and then a take-off into the unknown gully terrain to surprisingly end up at the Dell. 1 In no time the wood fire was blazing and out came the bacon, eggs, toast and coffee. You can just not beat a cook-out no matter how bard one may try and bacon and eggs on a crisp morning in the forest can- not be topped. In othor wôrds, highly reputable. But in the days of the Donnellys, it was Canada's most Iawless town. Mostly because of the Donnollys. They w(ýere violent, hard-drinking, fighting men who continued a feud wvith their neighbours that began in tho Old Coun- try. Eventually, they wvere blamod for every criminal act that occurrod in Lucan whether they did it or not. The Donnellys died as..violontly as theyl had lived. On the night of February 4, 1881, f ive members of the fami- Iv were mutilated and murdered by a vigilante commit- tee in one of the most brutal murders in the annals of Canadian crime. The vigilante group was made up of 40 villagers. Ap- parontly even the town constable was in on it. And there were charges that the parish priost was one of thé organîzers. The murderers were brought to trial but nover con- victed. The gory story fascinated peopie for generations and several books were writton'about the "Black Don- nellys" as one writer called themn. Until- recently, the more mention of the Donnellys' name was taboo around Lucan. There were many descendants of the vigilantes still there. But last month another hangover from the Donnelly era coropped up. The old Catholic Church the family had at- tended was slated for derrolition. Some of the parishoners wvanted to tear it dowvn and build a new one. Others foît it was historic and should bo preservod. Finally, after a lengthy squabblo an advisory board voted 9 to 8 to demolish it. But at the last moment tho Bîshop of the diocese intervened and saved it. I went down to the village and talkod to a few people about the, church. Some said it should have been destroyod, and with it, the memory of the Donnellys. Others thought differently. One woman said, "t's a good thing they'ro keeping it. At one time almost everybody around hero was hatched, matched and dispatched in that church." Things have changed in Lucan. The old guard is dying out. The new families don't mind talking about the Don- nellys at ail. You can even buy basebaîl caps and T-shirts emblaz¶ ed with "Lucan - Home of the Black Donnellys."
