Two Orono Tykes teams meet in Little Britain tournie The Tykes visited Little Britain on December 27th for their first tournament of the season (first of their careers for seven of the boys). They were full of Christmas turkey but you couldn't tell by the way they skated. Three players were missing s0 the eight skaters there were mighty tired at the end of the day. We started out playing Lindsay, who had a few older boys. It was a pretty close gaine in which Orono had lots of chances but ended up on the short end of a 3-1 score. Daryl Reid got the lone goal, assisted by Jamie Shetler and Andrew Burton. The second game was the semi-final of the consolation round and we faced 'the host team, Little Britain. After go- ing down 1-0 on a long shot fromn the blueline, Orono took over. Actually, Daryl Reid took over! Daryl scored foui consecutive goals and then set Michael Dreslinski up for the next two! What a Sgame! Wayne Gretzky look out! Jamie Shetier scoied his first two goals of the season to close outi in an 8-2 gamie. And who did we meet in the final? Orono Il! It's un- fortunate that there has to be a loser in such an encounter and on the day, Teamn Il were well worthy of its victory. la fact, Orono was the victor as both teamis represented the village well. Scor- ing for teain Il was Brian Good (5), Jeff Goodmurphy, Ben Deremo (2), Paul Woods (2), and Aaron Staples. Although they didn't score Brian Haines, Philip Cunn- ingham, Jeff Hughes and Chris Miller also played strong gamnes. Ia goal, Chad Maartense made several good stops to keep Teain1 from taking top hionours. Daryl Reid shone again in this gamne scoring ail four goals for his teamn. He was assisted by Greg Knox (2), Brandon Meadows, Mlichael Drestii- ski, Andrew Burton, Mark Foster, Jason Hill and Jamie Shetier. A good day and many thanks to coaches Knox, MIeadows and Sargent. The team travell1ed to Lit- tle Britain on Tuesday, December 27th, for the Tri- County Novice Tournament. The luck of the draw had us head-to-head with Lindsay our first gaine. Bare facts about bark by Harlin Hackman - Federation of Ontario Naturalists As a kid growing up in the country, 1 took great deiight in searching the nearby woods for the smnoothest tree trunks in which to carve my initiais. It was a kind of ter- ritorial hehiaviour, i suppose, and always great fun to see if 1 could retrace my steps a year or two later. One day when hie thought 1 was old enough to unders- tand simple Engiish, my father patientiy explained that trees need their bark just as wve need our skia. Somiehow that put a new light on the issue. 1 had always thought of bark as aothing more than a littie extra ar- mnour. la reality, trees, like every heaithy organism, have a sort of skia layer to protect their delicate internai workings. Your skia and the bark of a tree both growv, die, and fal (Conitinued page 6) mother-luck leaving us defeated 3-0. Gamne 2, however, saw Chad Maartense successfully chalk- up his second shut-out with his teainmates scoring 13 big goals. This was a big win for us, it useant we would be go- ing for the Consolation Chainpionship. Orono was destined to win because the final gaine had Orono Tykes 1 and Orono Tykes Il vieing for the trophy. Teain Il won 11 -4 as the boys showed there excellent capabilities of pass- ing that puck to demonstrate mature team play for there very young years. As the tournament statistics indicate ail the boys were instrumental in bringing home the trophy for the third consecutive year. Thanks to the Dutch Oven for there fine sponsorship. P. Cunningham B.
