One of the great things about Toronto is the system cf ravines which run down te the lake. Toronto was lucky it had ravines, because it meant, even in the days before serious town planning, tLhat valuable green space was saved. One of the biggest ravines is the Don Valley, which even a Parkway has been unable te spoil completely. 1 gave up jogging a few months ago because cf a particularly graphic description 1 read about the joit be- îng delivered te middle-aged knees in each runnîng stride. The impact on the joint is something more than three times body weight, wvhich in this case, is con- siiderable. Se 've taken up walking,' hard walking, instead. 1 got up shortly before seven o'clock one morning recently, and pushed off in the dark and bitter cold towards the Don Valley. The moon was stili up, low in the sky te the west, and the cold abated as 1 get inte my strîde and began te warmn up a littie. For alrnost an heur 1 was alone in the valley, except for the cars on the Parkway and a lone jogger. The Don River was frozen over for the most part, but the ducks were there in patches of open water. A rabbit scattered across the pathway from the right and disappeared inte bushes on the left. 1 stepped the pace up for a while, te try te get my heartbeat up te something appreaching a training rate. But 've discovered that the only way te de that is te lug a backpack with bricks in it, and this morning the backpack was still in the bedroom closet, forgotten. A big red fox burst out of the bushes on the rîght, ran up the pathway away from me for perhaps fifty yards, then ducked inte the tall grass down near the river bank. I'd nover seen a fox in the area befoara Mean- while, on the Parkway, just a few yards away, drivers fought towards their downtown offices, eblivieus net just cf foxes, but rabbits, ducks, trees, grass, and cold winter air. 1 walked on a few hundred yards, and above the hum -of traffic, heard the harsh screech cf a circi- ing hawk. 1 watched him for a while. He flew across the river and landed high ir a big tree on the Cher side. On the way back, 1 saw the fox again, skittering around on the glassy surface cf he river. Breakfast in the form cf a fat duck was probably w,,hatL he had in mmnd. In- credible. Right in the middle cf a big cîty like Toronto. It was a great wvalk. It made the tea taste better and the first pipe cf the merning an experience te be savoured. And it wvas a good way te start the day.
