4-Orono Weeklv mitmes, Wednesday, Februarv, 1, 1984 c Tennant F uellers champions at week-end ManvYers tournie On Saturday the Tennant Fuel- Atoms travelled to Manivers to compete in their tournamnent and came away winners. In doing so they were forced to corne froni behind to gain the victories. The lst game pitted afast skating Oshawa Black Hawk teamn against the 'Fuelers. Orono drew 1 st blood when Dustin Reid headmann- ed a perfect pass to Jason Brachvogel. Jason carried the puck into the corner then relayed it back to Kevin Roberts who was cutting into the slot area. Kevin fired à hard low sizzler which caught the outside corner. The Black Hawks fought back in the 2nd period with 2 unanswered goals of their owfl. Late in to the period after a mad scramble in front of Oshawa net the puck spurted out to the blue line to defensemnan Jimmny Partner. Jimmy skated in and fired a wicked shot which caught the top left hanid corner to even the gamne a 2-2. Jim's goal turned the tempo of the game as the Fuelers woke up and turned on the coals, Kevin Roberts scored what proved to bc the winner when he received a. perfect pass from Dustin Reid. Kevin then stickhandled pass both defenseman and drilled a hard low wrist shot which caught the outside corner. Orono then forechecked for the last 2 and a haif minutes of the gaine to defeat the Black Hawks by a 3-2 margin. 2nd GAME Orono advanced to the A side of the draw against a real tough team from Trenton. This proved to bc a real tough fought battie with both goaltenders being severely tested. At the 1:16 mark of the 2n1d period Kevin Roberts tied the gamne when he backhandled his own re- bound over a sprawling goaltender. Jeff Hartwig and David Sheridan did the spadework to earn the assists. Trenton then retaliated wth 2 quick gaols to go ahead 3-1. At this point it looked like Orono were through, except the parents started their chant GO ORONO GO and the Fuelers re:acted. Kevin Roberts notched his second goal of the game when Craig Nemis made a nice play by trapping the puck inside the blueline and set up Kevîn who made no mistakes. Score 3-2 Trenton. The Fuelers came alive and seconds later David. Sheridan intercepted a pass in his own end and stickhandled over centre. Dave spotted Kevin Roberts breaking clear and headmnanned the puck to hini. Kevin unleashed a hard low wrist shot which stymied the Trenton goalie. With the score tied at 3 apiece t was ail Orono with Kevini Roberts scoring hîs 4th goal of the gamne after Bradley Mennis pfin pointed a pass to set Kevin Up. D)avid Sheridan tallied his 4th assist of the game when he outmuscled a Trenton defenseman to gain- posses- sion of the puck to start the play. Final score was 4-3 Orono. A lot of credit for this win must go to the parents for the relentless cheering to spur the kids on. FINAL GAME The championship game slated the host teamn Manvers. Manvers defeated Ops Township and Oshawa Little Bruins to advance to the finals. The Fuelers knew they would be in for a tough con- test but didn't expect to be done by a 2-0 counit after the 2nd period. The Fuelers looked tired and were having trouble holding off a fired up, deter- mined Manvers team. Coach Russ Majors calied the boys to the bench at the start of the 3 period and told them they could corne back and not to give up. At this time the parents sensed something and picked up the tempo of their cheering. Then like a lightswîtch the boysý turned on the jets. Dustin Reid put the Fuelers on the board when he came tearing down the boards after Kevin Roberts set hlm up with-. a nice pass. Dusty unleashfed a wîcked drive which beat the Manvers goalie. At the 5:51 mark Jeff Hartwig tied the game at 2-2 when he fired a Iow wrist shot which slipped thru the goalies legs. David Sheridan earned the assist when he backhand- ed a pass to Jeff from the cor- ner. With just 2:30 remaining in the match David Sheridan stole the puck behind the Manvers net and passed it over to Jeff Hartwig. Jeff smartly relayed it back to Dave who then spotted Brent \Gates open in front of' the net. Dave fed hlm the puck and Brent slapped the puck over the goalies trapper to win the tournament for Orono. At this point we would like to thank the Manver's people for such a well run Tourna- ment. Also a lot of credit to the teams competing. Every game was a tooth and nail, battle. The Orono boys showed a lot a heart with Ryan Rock, Jason Major, goalie Shawn Hardy and the rest of the team giving their aIl. Kem-glo alkyd. semi-gloss Kem-velvet alkyd low lustre WHITES, -TINTS PAY 099 ONLY imperial gallon Orono Tyke Team 2 high in scoring, ideals & comradeship Saturday, January 28, 1984 The scoring was opened at 5:03 by Aaron Staples assisted by Paul Woods and Chad Maartense, Millbrook answered back at 10:31 to close out the first period in a one ail tie. 1The skating was fast, the shots were many and the Millbrook goalie was sharp. Paul Woods turned on the power in the second period to score the only goal by beating the goalie with his trick shot and the great pass by Jeff Hughes. Orono broke the scoring wide open in the third period. Brian Good opened up with an unassisted goal at 2:14. Assisted by Paul Woods, Aaron. Stapfles scored his se- cond goal of the game at 5:26. Aaron at 7:32 then got his third goal to give him his second hat trick of the season, assisted by Chad once again. Paul Woods and Brian Good bo th got their second goals of the gamte unassisted to finalize a 7-1 victory for the Orono Tykes. The statistics or score don't always give credit to everyone who deserves it, Chris Miller has played some super defen- sive hiockey of late so hiats off to Chris. The Tykes travelled to Port Hope Sunday and continuied their winning streak. Brian Good assisted by Ch-ris Milter opened the scor- ing at 2:55 of the first period. On a solid pass fromi Bryan Haines, Philip Cunninghamn put the puck in the net to close out the scoring leaving Orono ahead 2-0 at the end of the first. Ben Daremo fired in an unassisted goal at 5:36 leading Port Hopes goalie stumped. Aaron Staples on a rebound from Paul Woods scored the fourth Orono goal of the game. Port Hope did answer back this time by deeking Jeff Goodmurphy at 11:43. The third period -saw Aaron Staples assisted by Philip Cunninghiam) Ben Daremo and Brian Good assîsted by Jeff Hughes al receive second goals in this game. It is very refreshing to see thes'e young hockey players, not only develop fine hockeyý_ skills, but good comradeship. The teamn can attribute their success to the quality of ideals set byý their parents, along with the fair -play-at- titude of their coaches. It makes a big difference when a game is played for the sports sake and not merely for the prize.
