As one trail-user commented, "Why fty south with the first snap of frost when there are many oppor- tunities for winter activity right in the area." This year the average snow depth of 50 cm. is certainly ant asset for the quatity winter recreationat traits in the Lind- say District. There are several traits avaitabte on pubtic land for cross-country skiing and snowmnobiting. The groomed traits are located at the Ganaraska Forest and Emnity Tract. The Ministry of Naturat- Resources groomns 65 km. of snowm-obite traits in the G-aniaraska Forest. The forest also offers 47 kmi. of cross- counitry ski trails, groomned by the Ganiaraska Region Conservation Authority. Att levets of skiers are welcome to challenge these sceniic trails. Emity Tract, adjacenit to Emily Provincial Park, is ter- rific for an afternoon outing. The 2.2 km. groomed trait is located on a forested ridge which provides a variety of slopes and scenery. It isn't often thet I let Canadian parochialism get to me. Most of the time 1 push Canada's drawbacks back out of sight and arn comfortable instead with the many virtues of a country_ that is outside the f renetic mainstream of Western society. There is a lot to love here, wNhich is a good thing, becau§e this is home, and it is too late for me to feel at home anywhere else. But 1 must admit that one day recently, it was one of the country's deficiencies which preoccupied me. The way we treat artists, by and large, is shocking. For nearly fourteen years now, 1 have known a man named John Reynolds very well. John, or "Mac" as many of his friends know him, is a friend of mine, so 'l admit the possibility of prejudice at the outset. But what there can be no doubt about is John Reynolds' stature as a portrait sculptor. Few people outside ar- tistic circles in Canada know of him, but he has long been a member of the British Royal Society. He has pro- duced one of the, largest collections of bronzes in private hands in this country. He has had shows in London. When our department of External Affairs needed a bust of Norman Bethune to preÉent to the Chineseý govýrnment, Mac Reynolds was commissioned to do t. Q ne of-the Bethune heads is in China, wvhere it beloligs. Another is at York University's Bethune Collage, Wlýen the Confederation Centre in Charlottetown wanted a bust of Queen Elizabeth 1l, Mac was ap- proached to do that. And this summer, Mac, Reynolds, my irréverent, liberated friend of a hundred lunches, spent'a month working on the Queen's head and shoulders in Buckingham Palace. A few days ago, in a temporary gallery in Toronito's Moore Park, 1 saw the result. A magnificent bronlze of Elizabeth 1l, the mature Queen that Reynolds captured so completely in f ive or six hour-long sittings last sum- mer. She is wearing her naval cape, with the clasp open at the neck, and on her breast is the Order of Canada. In reaiity, it is only about one and a quarter times lifesize. But its presence is much'larger than that. It fis the room, the house and Moore Park, for the matter. The room is crowdc -1 with Mac's bronzes - dominated by the portrait of the Queen and the massive head of Norman Bthune at the other end. 1 don't think there is much doubt that his bust of the Queen-witl become the definitive portrait of Her Ma- jesty in late middle life. The bronïze 1 saw will go to Charlottetown, but copies of it could and should be struck. There are a number of Canadian centres which ought to have one. , However, finding patrons in this country is a Her- culean task, and artists like John Reynolds must either spend ail their time chasing after the monied establish- ment or say the hell with it and get on with their art. John Reynolds, as that room full of heads testifies un- mistakeably, has been getting on with bis art. Patrons? Pity. Not in Canada. Orono men hitting' the 'Most Sexy List imm g mmim ',
