Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms go down to defeat fighting On Saturday evening akwood came to town to lay the first of a 2 out of 3 series with the Fuelers to determine the double zone champion. The end result was a 2-2 draw between two even- ly matched teams. Orono seemed a little tired from playing Essex earlier in the game and allowed the Oakwood team to score late into the first period. Both teams were really checking and the goaltending was ex- tremely sharp at both ends of the ice. Oakwood went ahead by a 2-0 count early into the se- cond period firing in a goal that Shawn Hardy had no chance on. At this point of the game the Fuelers looked like losers. However, they kept plugging away and seemed to get stronger as the game progressed. Late into the period David Sheridan received a nice clearing pass from defenseman Jimmy Partner. David carried the puck over the red line and spotted Scott McAllister streaking down the boards. Dave headmanned him a perfect pass to put him into a clearcut breakaway. Scott made no mistakes unleashing a hard low wrist shot which fooled the Oakwood goaltender. 'he game progressed into the third period with both teams getting their chances but Shawn "Sleepy" Hardy of Orono and Barry Phillip of Oakwood held the fort. With 5:06 seconds remaining in the game Bradley Minnis headmanned a beautiful pass to Scott McAllister who broke over the blue line and let loose another hard wrist shot which caught the outside corner. Orono had several chances late in the game when Oakwood drew a tripping penalty but they were unable to pop home the winner. 2nd Game On- Wednesday we travell- ed to Oakwood and were defeated by a 5-1 score. The Oakwood boys were really up for this one and the Fuelers came up flat. Cameron Esler scored Orono's only goal late in the second period when he fired a low wrist shot into the far corner after receiving a nice pass from Scott McAllister. pavid Sheridan earned the other assist when he out- muscled an Oakwood defenseman and flipped the puck to Scott. 3rd Game With their backs to the wall the Fuelers came out fighting and turned back the visitors by a 3-1 count. Dustin Reid drew first blood when he fired a hard low shot from just inside the blue line to put the Orono team into a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period. Kevin Roberts set Dustin up with a nice pass to earn the assist. Cameron Esler made it 2-0 Orono late into the secontl period when he scored a power play goal from the side of the net. David Sheridan and Scott McAllister earned the assists on the play. Just 42 seconds later Oakwood fought back to make it 2-1 Orono. , The Fuelers strong check- ing and Shawn Hardy's sharp goaltending blanked the Oakwood team for the re- mainder of the game. Dustin Reid put the icing on the cake when he received a nice- pass from Kevin Roberts and sunk the puck into an empty net with just 47 seconds remaining in the game. Jim Partner, Craig Nemis, Bradley Minnis and Jason Major stopped everything at the blue line to help the cause. 4th Game On Thursday night the Fuelers travelled to Oakwood to play the final and deciding game to determine the double zone champs. Unfortunately the Oakwood boys proved a little too strong for the Fuelers and skated away to a 5-0 win. The Orono boys put up a strong game and the score was not indicative of the play. However, the Oakwood team are a good team and will now face Wellington for all the marbles. At this point we would like to congratulate the Orono boys for a great season. They won their league chaynpion- ship, zone championship, the Manvers tournament, B side of the Bowmanville tourna- ment and 2nd place at Beaverton Tournie. ' They should be proud of their accomplishments. Atoms 9 - Fathers 7 On Saturday night the Ten- nant Fuel Atoms played their fathers and skated away with a 9-7 victory. However, this game is under protest by the fathers. The game was scheduled to be a no-contact affair. However, referee Murray Minnis allowed the kids to hand out bone rattling body checks. There is no doubt the Fathers have one of the cleanest teams to ever play hockey. David "Shifty" Sheridan and Ryan "Casanova" Rock were throwing their weight around all night and were not penalized. Jason "Jumbo Burger"- Brachvogel and Shawn "Sleepy" Hardy kept dropp- ing their gloves and challeng- ed several of the dads to a fight. At one time during the se- cond period Dennis Hartwig was literally beaten up by nine Atoms and the referee said he didn't see a thing. The turning point of the GIVE THE Oroio limes A CALL 981531 game came when referee Min- nis handed the fathers a dou- ble minor for pulling Jimmy Partner into their bench and sitting on him. Murray would not accept the explanation that Jimmy went into the father's bench by mistake and couldn't open the door to get back out. At times it appeared as if the Atoms had 14 men on the ice to the Fathers' five. When the fathers protested the referee replied that the Atoms are so fast it only appears they had 14 men on the ice at the same time. Also just when the dads were about to score a second- puck would appear on the ice with 3 or 4 Atoms breaking away against the dads' goalie. When the fathers questioned the call they were handed an unsportsmanlike penalty. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that the fathers are a much better team than the Fueler Atoms and they would like .a rematch. The 1984 Tennant Fuel Atoms team consisted of the following players: Shawn "Sleepy" Hardy David "Shifty" Sheridan Kevin "Suzy-Q" Roberts Jason "Jumbo Burger" Brachvogel Jeff "Granny" Hartwig Scott "Meatball" McAllister Ryan "Casanova" Rock Jason "Heartthrob" Major Cameron "Lady Killer" Esler Brent "Lover Lips" Gates Bradley "Madman" Minnis Craig "Crazy Legs" Nemis Jimmy "Smiley" Partner Dustin "The Hunk" Reid Orono Weeklv Times, Wednesday, March 28, 1984-5 Orono Tyke team 2 win over Newcastle, now to face mothers Orono Tykes Team 2 met Newcastle Wednesday night for the final scheduled game of the year. The pace was fast and both teams demonstrated some excellent techniques. The scoring was opened at the six minute mark of the first period by Brian Good with a solid pass by Chad Maartense. With 10 seconds to go in the period Aaron Staples on a rebound by Philip Cunningham put Orono ahead by two. Brian Good assisted by Aaron Staples got his second goal of the game at 10:45. Aaron Staples scored the final goal of the game unassisted in the third to finalize the victory 4-0 for Orono. Most of the credit in a win- ning game is attributed to the forwards for their ability to score. Not to take anything away from our scorers, our defensemen Wednesday played a super defensive game and without their deter- mination to stop goals, the end result might have been quite different. Good effec- tive defence is as important as scoring a goal, because, if the competition can't put the puck in the net, they can't win. So hats off to al you defensemen and goalies. Saturday, March 31st, at 1:30 at the Orono Arena the Tykes Team 2 will take on their Mothers. The Mothers guarantee a victory for their team in spite of the boys being better skaters, players and sport- smen. Mothers Game Plan and Strategy - We have hired a professional coach, we have had secret practices (12), we have all completed the eight levels of power skating. If you believe all of the above wait till you see who the referee and linesperson are, and how much it's going to cost us to bribe them. All and all we have a very entertaining game planned for the boys and their Fathers, so don't miss the ac- tion and do bring your cameras, "Ripley's Believe It or Not" assured us they would be in attendance to document the event. Camsport Atoms come from behind to beat Ennismore Camsport Atoms faced elimination from playoff ac- tion as they trailed En- nismore (White) by 2 games to 1. Orono came out very determined and skated hard. Greg Hooper opened the scoring breaking in on the right side and firing a shot which the goalie could not handle. Shane Jones assisted on the goal. Scott Hall and Jarret Prescott shared the goaltending duties for Orono and stopped many difficult shots. At 2:49 of the second period Ennismore tied the game but Scott Williams gave Orono the lead again a minute later. Scott's goal was set up by tough working Chris Simpson and Greg Hooper. Jamie Ball and Shane Gylytiuk came close to scoring several times. Ennismore fought back again to tie the game 29 seconds into the third period. Shane Van Dam, Scott Hart- wig, Sean McKenzie, played very well on defense especial- ly keeping the puck in the op- ponenets end. Orono attack- ed constantly throughout the period to try and get the go ahead goal. With only 1:19 remaining in the game Scott Williams fired the puck over a sprawling goalie in the En- nismore net to give Orono a -3-1 lead. Andy Taylor madeit 4-2 twenty seconds later, assisted by Scott Williams to give Orono some breathing room. With only 9 seconds left in the game Jeff Devolin scored to put the icing on the cake. Assisting were line mates Andy Taylor and Scott Williams. The 5-2 victory tied the series at 2 games each with the fifth game to be played in Ennismore on Sunday, March 25th at 3:00. The fifth game of the series was a real barn burner in En- nismore. The first and second periods were scoreless but they were certainly full of ac- tion and excitement.
