CIarke team tops 'Think Bowl' comp. by Chris Hooper Clarke Co-operative Student Recently 240 students from the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Educa- tion participated in the fourth annual "Think Bowl" Com- petition. The Think Bowl is an enrichment programme in- volving creative problemn solving. The contest, held at Cobourg's L:ion's Centre, was divided into 3 categories. Thirty teams of grade 4-6 students were given a ques- tion with the theme of On- tario's Bicentennial and were asked what life would have been like in 1784. In this junior category, a tearn from Dr. L.B. Powers Public School in Port Hope captured firist place. The team members were Krista Boyce, Kylen McReelis, Chris Rinder and Daniel Taylor. In the intermediate category, 23 teams from grades 7 ta 8 were asked ta describe the ramifications of winning 1,000 dollars in a lot- tery. The winners in this divi- sion were Krista Sto ne, Kelly Tobey, Mike Lisle and Keith Ferrier, a team front Brighton Public School. Also competing in the in- termediate category was a team from The Pines Senior Public School. Team members Shana Hillis, Alyson~ Westheuser, Blain Smith and Steven Shaefer managed a second, place finish. Competing in the senior category were 4 secondary school teams from grades 9 ta Il. These students took a look at the problems associated ,ith the building of a covered sparts stadium in a large city. The team from Clarke High School made up of Janne Tamblyn, Jeff Lowery, Richard Cherry and Murray Jose grabbed first place. The Clarke team is ex- pected ta go on ta the next level of competition but the team's coach, Mr. David Parker, says arrangements have not been finalized. Students were given twa and a half hours in which to- complete a bookiet that outlined the problemn solving procedure they were to use. Teams were asked ta list pro- blems and then possible solu- tions. The answers were then judged by the number of ideas and creativiry. The win- ning teams were given a trophy and banner for their school along with individual trophies for each team member. The Think Bowl Competi- tion was designed ta make students really think instead of memorizing 'facts as so many of the contests did in the past.
