Mr. Dave Hinton makes bis borne, and bis gardens, just off of Taunton Road nortb of the village. It is easy to see that Mr. Hinton is an avid gardener because many beautîful plants can be found in his back yard, and it is obvious that rhododendrons are his speciatity. Car sales booming Canadian car sales are booming, Genierat Motors of Canada just had the best May since the record year of 1979 and recorded a 53 percent in- crease in combined car and truck sales in its fourteenth month of improved sales. Chryster Canada had the best May in the company's history. Ford Canada had an eight percent increase in car sales with truck sales uip tenr percent. Eggs were brought fromn Grand'Prairie, Alberta (at a cost -of about $250 each) and placed in the nests of Mute Swvans in the Cranberry Marsh. These nests witt be watched very ctosety for the next two weeks for signs of the Marsh's new trumpeter swans. Looking for Racquethail titie Oshawa's Tracy Eagleson, a 19-year-old Donevan Col- tegiate student, is the onty femnale from Ontario representing Canada at the Wortd Raquetbalt Cham- pionship to be held this sum- mer in Los Ang-eles. There will be sixteen counitries tak- ing part in the World Cham- pionships and Tracy says it is a bit dîsheartening not to be in the Olympics but she is sure that they will be caught up in thespirit. Town constructing new sait domne Butk Store Structures Ltd. of Erin, Ontario bas submit- ted the towest bid for con- struction of a 116 foot diameter sand/salt storage domne for the Hampton Works Depot. The bid of, $62,000 has been accepted by the Newcastle Council's generat purposes and ad- min istration committee and is expected to be formalty ap- proved by the council next week. The dangers of the barbecue The Oshawa Fire Depart- muent has been called to seven rhododendrons, Mr. Hinton said-that he had been in- terested in gardenîng and when he heard of the Rhododendron Society he decided to join. He grew his own plants with seeds obtained from other sources for about seven ears. As his interest grew, he decided to cross hîs own plants and for the past five years has been creating his own breeds. He stitt receives seeds from gas barbecue fires in the tast month and Oshawý,a fine prevention officer, A. Patter- son, says that poorly main- tainied connections are pro- babty causing the problems. Patterson says people shoutd paint a soap and water' solution and paint it over the gas connection, if there is a teak the solution witl buble, don't use ighters or matches. Cuts at Cobourg Library The Cobourg Library will be forced to close on Mon- days to cut costs. The library had budgeted for $180,555 but the town reduced its atlotmnent by $26,000. Other cuts, such as reduction in the hours of somne part-time staff and reduced book and periodicat budgets have also been made. No French Immersion Kinidergarten There witt be no F rench Immersion kindergarten ctass in Port Hope this fati as fewer students than expected had registened. Most trustees of the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Educa- tion support the idea, but there is no area in the budget from which the money coutd be taken. One class of tate, or Grade 6, French Immersion for Port Hope next year has already been approved by the board.
