Two thrown- out of car Early Thursday morning, two men were found semi- conscious in a group of trees on the 'Eighth Concession, west of Leskard, north of Orono. They were thrown out of their car when the car left the road, flew through the air and landed in a ditch. The driver of the car, 21-year-old Wayne Robinson of Port Perry, is in critical condition at Toronto General Hospital while Todd James, 22, of Blackstock is in critical condition at Sunnybrook Medical Centre. Should pick effective solution, flot cheapest In response to the Durham Region's garbage problem, Newcastle counicillor, Diane Hamre, told a meeting of the Works Committee that she would not fight a proposai to the location of a landfill site somewhere in the municipali- ty, but she says the region must promise environmental safety. She warned the committee that landfill sites are not the best means of garbage disposai, although it may be the cheapest and the region should pick the most effective solution, not the cheapest. Testing vwater for swimming Public Health officiais are testing samples taken from Lake Ontario's beaches and swiinming holes and they should know by the beginn- ing of the week if beaches are safe for swimming this sum-_ mer. Inspectors have been tak- ing samples for several weeks and the readings of these tests must be averaged before the bacteria content can be deter- mined'. COMMITTEE DENIES SITE EXPANSION Regional Reclaimers Ltd. A Newcastle waste disposaI firm, hias been denied the right to expand its Orono landfill site by the Durhami Regional Planning Comnmit- tee. Regional Reèlaimners has been trying for over a year to obtain permission for a 40 hectare addition to its gar- bage dump east of Highway 115. Orono counicillor Diane Hamre said company asser- tions that the local industries need the expansion to remiain open are'unfounded and in her opinion the expansion of the site wili not allow garbage tobe handled in a responsible manner. REGION CALLING FOR CHANGES Unless it is given full con- trol, the Dnrhamr Region will withdraw ail financial and practical aid from the 1985 Pickering tourism marketplace. Economic developmnent director, Gerald Gervais, hias, given the operators of the event a 13 point list of changes for next year which includes better advertising, a better location, special promotionial events and the sale of tourist-and- recreation related merchan- dise. The Village of Orono and Clarke Museum were part of the show in May and com- ment that improvements do need to be made if the event is to continue. DURHAM POLICE TURN DOWN OFFER The latest contrat pro- posals offered by the police commission-have been turnied down by the uniformed of- ficers of Durham Regional Police. The offer would have raised salaries and variouis benefits by 5.04 per- cent over one 'year. President of Durhami Regional Police Association, Dale Allan, says they will probably, apply for a concilia- tion officer on Friday and if things are not resolved at this time they will takejt to ar- bitration. BATTLE SHAPING UP The battie is stili on bet- ween Oshawa Mayor Allant Pilkey and Durhamn Region over Oshawa's înterest in the regionai headquarters building. Management com- mittee memrbers received a recommendation on Wednes- day which asked the region. to seli the headquarters to the province then lease back of- fice space. But Pilk9ey says thbat the recommendat ion is premature because it does not take alternate sites or Oshawa's dlaim on the regional building into ac- count.
