No. A1022 Mtinor sports in the Village of Orono is on 'a definite upswing this sumnmer and in ail the Orono Amateur Athletic Association is spon- soring 22 minor teams for both boys and girls in both soccer, hardball and girls' softball. It has been estimated that more children and teenagers are playing summer sports than were registered in both figure skating and hockey last winter. SOCCER The Athletic has nine minor soccer teams playing Linder its banner this suier. Seven of the fine teams play in the Bowmanville United Soccer house league in which competition comes from Solina, Hampton, Tyrone and Bowmanville. Other than Bowmanville Orono has the largest con- tingent in the league. The Orono teams represent the Tykes, two Squirt teams, two Atom teams, Mosquito team and a PeeWee team. The Orono Bantam Soccer' Club, also playing under the Athletic banner, plays in the Oshawa Parks league. To complete the Athletic Soccer group the Orono Junior soccer Club plays in the Darlington Soccer leaÈue. One can add ta sc,ýcer in Orono the Senior teamn which plays in the Darlinýgton Soc- cer league and theOld Timers team playing in the Pickering OId Timers league. Soccer has boomed ahead over the past few years and this is miost noted in the Village of Orono. GIRLS' SOFTBALL The Village girls are this summe r quite active. in the Athletic summer programn with fine girls' softball teains tlaying in a laegue with Tyrone, Hampton and Solina. The Orono contingent is made up of one Squirt team, one Novice team, four' PeeWee teams, two Bantam teams and one Midget team. H ere again there is a noted increase in the numbers play- ing softball in týe community in the girl's league. In the girls division Kendal -Eagles play 500 bail to date The Kendal Eagles,_playing Intermediate BaIl now have a .500 average for the first part of the schedule with six wins and six losses. Over the past week the Kendal club did go dlown ta defeat on two ocassions first at the hands of -Port Hope. and later beina blanketed by Ajax. On July 4th Port Hope took a 7 ta 6 win over Kendal even though Kendal was hit- tinlg well in the nine nning game. Hits went ta John Robin- son 2, Guy Parks 2, Bill Robinson 2 and sngles to Eric Moore, Jimn Newton, Terry Thompson, Fraser Wallace and Dwight Wood- ward. On Saturday Ajax kept thie Kendal club to tiree hits while taking the game by a score of five to nothing. Steve WVest, Kirk Wood- ward and Murray O'Brien gathered in the three Kendal hits between them. ALL-STAR GAME The annual Molson Ail- Star game will be played in the Kendal Park on Sunday, July lSth commencing at 2:00 p.m. The Kendal Eagles will be tperating thp booth dur- ing the gamne. On Saturday, JuIy l4th the Eagles will play a double- header at the Kendal Park- with the openîng game with Markham starting at 1:00 p.m. and the second gamýe starting at 4:30 p.m. with Peterborough being in the field with thie Eagies. Bowmanville and Newcastle are associated wîth Slow- Pitch bahl rather than softball and have an interlocking league between the two cen- tres. BOY'S BASEBALL In basebali the Orono Athletic are sponsoring four teams. Orono has two Tyke teams and one PeeWee team which play in the Bowmanville house league. The Orono Bantam basebaîl team, also under the banner of the Athilic, is in fast competition p]aying in the Eastern Ontario Basebaîl league with such centres1 as Kingston, Belleville, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Port Hope, Cobourg, Peterborough and Belleville. The Orono Bantams have done remarkably well in the league to this point with four wins, one tie and five losses The summer minor sport scene in Orono, is, indeed, an active one for 1984 and al organized and financed under the-Orono Amateur Athletic Association.
