Lack supp Newcastle The Region of Durham lacked sufficient approval front property owners on Baldwin and Clarke Streets in the Village of Newcastle for the inistallation of a $86,000 water main to service the pro- perties in the south of the Village. The proposai came before Regional council last week with a staff recommendation that the project nrot proceeed due to the lack of approval from the majority of the twelve property owners. Regional council concurred and the project is not to pro- ceed. 0f the twelve property own'rers affected, four gave approval for the installation while eight were termed to 'be opposed to. the project and the payment of related costs for the service. 0f the eight objections, onie did not reply to the questionnaire while another setforth a condition that they be allowed to create another building lot. Regional charges associated to the watermain project wouldinclude a fron- tage charge as well as a con- nection charge. The frontage charge for a 100 foot fron- tage would have amounted to $2,607.00 with the connp.o- tion charge set a $1,250.00. This charge holds in aIl areas of the Region of Durham for such installations. The amounts are payable in ether a lump sumn or over a twenty year period. The Region estimates the user charge for water on the average, depending on con- sumption, at $9350 a year. Property owners on Baldwin and Clarke Streets through frontage and con- nection charges would have paid, ini total, $38,000 of the cludinig the two in Durham region, are going to tenider iort for new water main total $86,000 installation charges. The remainder of the monies required would have been taken from the Region's current funds and the Regional lot levyý accoun.t. Sixýty-nine 4-H agricultural Club members participatted in the annual judging comipeti- tion held on the farms of Gerald Brown and family and the Richard family a[ Ceresmnore Farms. 4-H members judged classýes of Holstein cows, Crossbrecd market steers, breedinig ewes,,market hogs% and hay. Ini addition, an iden- tification quiz and a general agricultural knowledge quiz was comipleted. Membhers were divided into Novice, 1,2-14 years of age anid first judging competi- tion; J1uniiior, 12-14 years; and Senior, 15 years and over. Local 4-H leaders and other farmners acted as officia] judges. Winning the Novice sec- tioni and the C.N.E. Shield was Glenn Barkey of Blackstock-with 516 points out of a possible 650 points. Second was Grace Prins, Hamipton and third vas Pauline Beckett, Bowmnile. In the Junior sectionl, first place and reci- pient of the Royal Bank Rose Bowl was Faith Benschop of Bowý,manville. Second was Stephen McHolm, Port Hope and third was Geof Sikma from Orono. Winner of the E.A. Sum- mers Trophy and the Senior section xas Krista McHoIm of Port Hople; second was Lynin McLaughlin of Nestleton and third was Brent MlcLaughilin of Nestleton. In the teami competitions, the first place club \vas the Durham 4-H Dairy Club with team members, (Glenn Barkey, Howard Sikma and Krista McHolm.
