CON VERT-TO-RENT MEANS MORE RENTAL HOUSING IN ONTARIO Ontario is offering interest- free boans of $7,000 for each new rentai unit to help create more moderate rentai- housing throughout the pro- vince. The ministry of Municipal Affairs and Hous ing's $18.2 million Convert- to-Rent program will produce 2,600 new apartments province-wide and improve the appearance of our nkeighbourhoods. The program is a tîmely alternative to 'the traditional reliance on new construction to fulfill our rentai housing needs. Convert-to-Rent not only adds to Ontario's rentai housing stock, it resuits in the better utilization of existing structures and services as *weil. There, are a range of pro- perties which qualify for financial assistance under Convert-to-Rent. For exam- pie, new rentai units could be added to existing housing projects or non-residential buildings. Non-residential property such as an empty school or office or space over a retail store could be con- verted into rentai housinig. The whole community wil benefit from Convert-to-Rent projects. Much needed, moderateiy priced rentai housing is more available. New. income is generated for pr operty owners. Water, roads and sewage services are used more productively. Beyond improving our hous- ing situation, the program is helping to create work oppor- tunities in the construction and renovation areas. The Convert-to-Rent pro- gram began as part of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing's $25 million series of rentai housing in- iti atives to encourage the creative development of new housing and the preservation of existing accommodation. Launched initially in Toronto and Ottawa, Convert-to-Rent has been extended to every community in Ontario. Nr*4EW FIRE EMERGENCY It's been sometime since such action bas been seen in the Orono business section. Local reidents increased ilhe interest by taking part in the Yard Sale in the business sec- tion. At least ten had set up Region cashes $2.2 million in cred aits Some councillors, of the Region of Durham are somewhat irate over the fact that the management com- mittce of the Region gave authority to cash $2.2 million in letters of cre dit from the ili-fated Brooklin develope- ment proposai. The action was taken without referrai to council but it was pointed out that to mnake the action public would have tipped the procedure to the knowledge of the developer who had provided the letters of credit. Two years ago, councii members of the Region, in a majority, gave approval of the Brooklin proposai, which was contrary to recommenda- tions from staff. Diane, Hamre, who originaily voted against the proposed development, stated last week that she- could not understand why opponents were complaining of the action of cashing the letters of credit when it was well known at the time of giv- ing approvai that such letters would in ail likelihood be casýhed. tables for the event and add- cd their part in making the sale a community event.
