4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 7, 1984 S-PORTS Orono and- Bewdley -MNid gets trade wins to open season Midgets Orono 3,- Bewdley 5 Monday, Oct. 22/84 saw the Hamîltons Insurance Oj.M.H.A. Mid gets open the regular season on the short end of a 5-3 score. The first period saw the local lads come up with the'only goal of the period by Scott Mc- Cullough assisted by Keith Vey. In the second period eewdley's Keith Morgan tied the gaine -at 1 -1 only to see Orono's Scott McCullough come up wîth his second of the gamne assisted by Keith Vey and Eric Dreslinski to put Orono back in front by a 2-1 count. After two periods of excellent end, to end hockey the local lads started to forget about hockey and, with some questioInable calîs spent most of the third period playtng a man short which cost them the game. As Bewdley outscored the local lads by a 4-I count to end the game Bewdley 5 and Orono 3. Came on guys you can't score from the penalty box. Orono 3 - Bewdley 1 Monday, Oct. 29/84 saw Bewdley come back to town again and this game saw the local lads stick to hockey for three periods instead of the stupid penalty play the week before. The first period saw both teams play fast excting end to end hockey, with numerous scoring chances only to be shut out by ex- cellent goaltending at both ends. The second period saw Bewdley open the scoring on a fluke goal by Steve Edger- ton as he shot the puck which came off the backboards and bounced in off of Allan Hall in the Orono nets for a 1 -0 lead. With 0.19 seconds left in the second period Orono's Brad Roberts tied the score at m- assisted by Keith Vey and Steve Lycett. The third period saw Orono keep on the pressure and come up wîth two more while shutting oui the Bewdley team to win the game 3-1. Scoring the Orono goals were Paul Henry assisted by Jim Woods and Steve Lycett, then David Lafrance with assists going to Mike Cairns and Keith Vey. Special mention to David Lafrance, Keith Vey & Scott McCullough. Excellent game guys!! Matth ew-Hill PeeWe-es up fr ontin first three games1 Orono 1 - Newcastle 0 On Tuesday, Oct. 23 the Orono Matthew Hill Peewees played the first exhibition gaeof the year' against Newcastle. The end result *was hard fought 1-0 victory for the Orono squad. This game featured tight checking and excellent goaltending by both teams. Billy Tood and Shawn Hardy shared the goaltending for Orono, and played brilliantly to earn the shutout. Not to be outdone Jeff Vanhaverbeke was almost, unbeatable in the Newcastle net. The Newcastle team feature a strong defence who clear the puck weIl and combined with sick forwards, they are a strong team. Matthew Hill Peewees although smaer in sîze are very qwick and ag- gressive. Goaltending on both'teaip1s is top notch. Midway through the first period Kevin Roy outhustled a Newcastle forward and send a clearing pass àout of his own end. David Sheridan from his left wing position outraced the Newcastle defense and gained posses- sion just outside his own blueline. 1With the visitors defense- men in hot persuir David turned on the jets to get a clear cut breakaway. The speedy. Sheridan made no mistakes fîring a high wrist shot which caught the top left hand corner. This proved to be the win- ner with both teams unable to beat the goaltenders the rest of the match. Orono got lucky late into the third period when Shawn 4-l.ardy kicked out a hard slap shot. A Newcastle forward flipped the rebound over a sprawling Shawn. The puck trickled along the goal line when Blane Souch jumped over Shawn and scooped the puck to safety. With a wide open net fac- ing him the right Winger from Newcastle fired the loose puck. From nowhere Orono defenseman Brent Osmond dove to block a sure goal. If this gaine is any in- dicator we are in for a real barnburner when these two teains square off in Newcastle for their lst league game against each other., Gaine time 7.00 p.m. Thurs. Nov. 1 . The line of Jason, Adey, Kevin Roy and David Sheridan were really clickinâg in this gaine. Mike Goodmur- phy,, Brent Osmond, Jason Major and, Craig Nemis an- chored a strong defénse. Orono Matthew Hill Peewees win Season Opener The Orono Matthew Hill Peewees opened the regutar season with a 3-0 victory over a visiting Manvers team. The local tearn. was fired up pretty good and took control early into the lst perlod when Jason Adey notched his I st goal of the season. Jason Burnham did the spade work on this goal when he dug the puck out of the corner ýand wheeled around the net, fir- ing a hard wrist shot, which was. kicked out by the Manver's goalie.Jason Adey scooped upi the rebound and lifted a h igh backhander over a sprawling goalie. Orono went ahead 2-0 late into the second period when Brian Rodd slid his own te- bound under the Manvers netminder. Jeff Hartwig who was really hustling al night set Brian up with a perfect pass. Blaine-Souch started the 3rd period off to a good start when he stole the puck just inside Manvers blue line and hit Brian Rodd -with a nice pass. Brian cut into the cor- ner and fired a perfect pass to Jeff "Granny" Hartwig who was parked in front of the net. Jeff deflected the puck between the goalie's legs to close the scoring off at 3-0 Orono. The Orono boys played an aggressive game to earn the win, although the passing could 'have been a lttle sharper. This will come as the season progresses and the players adapt to their new linemates. Manvers are usually slow starters and come on strong towards the end 'of the season. This seems to be their trademark, so they should not be taken lightly by any mieans. Shawn Hardy and Biîly Todd came up with some big saves to split the shutout. Todd Gray and Kevin Roberts were really flying for the Matthew. Hill side. This year's teamn is coached by none other than Russ Major assisted by D ennis Hartwig and Bob Sheridan. Orono 6 - Newcastle 0 On Thursday, Nov. I the Matthew Hill Peewees of Orono visited the Newcastle OMHA team and skated away with an impressive 6-0 win. The Orono boys played their best game of the young season to earn the victory. Midway into the lst period David "Shifty" Sheridan continued his scoring streak when he'ifted Jason Adey's rebound over a sprawling Newcastle goalie. Jason "Boom Boom" Burnhamn started the play when he dug it out of the corner to set up Jason. 'Late into the period Todd Gray took a beautiful pass from Kevin Roberts and fired a hard wrist shot that the Newcastle goalie had no chance on. This made it 2-0 for Orono. The Matthew Hill gang continued to pour on the coals going into the second period with Blaine Souch notching his 1lst marker of the season. Blaine's goal came after some tremendous pressure around the opposi- tion's net. The Newcastle goalie made 2 tremendous saves on Brian Rodd and Jeff Hartwig before Blaine finally beat him with a hard low wrist shot, 3-0 Orono. Tennant Fuel OMHA Atoms remain unbeaten this The 1984-5 hockey season started for the Orono Ten- nant Fuel Atoms on Satur- day, Oct. 27 with a fine team effort for a 7-1 victory over Manvers. The Orono boys fired 34 shots at the Manvers goal while Cameron Esler and Robin Leth, in the Orono goal, stopped 13 of 14 shots fired at them. Brent Gates opened the scoring 28 seconds into the gamne. Manvers tied it up 3 minutes later. Ryan Rock deflected a Jim Partner shiot to make it 2-I at 4:50 of the Ist period. Brent Gates scored his second goal of the gaine with 1:23 remnaining in the opening period assisted by Dustin Reid. In the second period Dustin Reid scored the only goal of the period unassisted at 4:19 to mnake i! 4--I. Heading into the 3rd period Orono continued to attack with.a goal by Scott Williamns at 1:35 assisted by Scott McAllister and Sean McKen- zie. Tyler Adey scored Orono's 61h goal assisted by Dustin Reid with 6:52 left in the game. With only 1 second showing on the dlock Stephien Stadelmann found the m1ark assisted by Paul Flintoff. Chad VanDam, Trevor Lomax and Creg Hooper ahl ptayed a strong gamne as the entire team got off to a good start for the season. Shane Jones was out of the lineup with a sprained ankle. He returned for the Newcastle game. In Newcastle on Nov. 3 the Orono boys played a scoreless first period of hockey. It was not until 3:12 of- the second period that Scott Williams fired a shot from the leftside of the net which deflected off a skate into the Newcastle goal. Newcastle came back with At 'the 5.00 minute mark Orono made it 4-0 when David Sheridan tallied his se- cond goal of the night. David was knocked down in front of the net but still managed to backhand the puck into the top right hand corner before a big Newcastle defensemnan made a hamn sandwich of him. Brent Osmond and Todd Gray did the spade work on this goal to earn the assists. Jason Adey got his second point of the night when he stickhandled pass both defenseman and fired a hard wrist shot to the stick ide. Jason previously played for Oshawa and has fit right in with our team. Orono 5 - Newcastle 0. Todd "The Chipmunk" Gray put the icing on the cake late in the game when he receîved an excellent pass from Brent Osmond and slapped a low drive which caught the outside corner of the net. This was Todd's best gamne of the year as he mianaged 3 points on the night. Shawn Hardy and Billy Todd continue to play steady between the pipes. They shared their 3rd shutdown in 4 games so far this season. Orono received strong 2 way efforts from Craig Nemis, Jason Major, Jason Brachvogel and Mike Good- murphy. 2:29 left in the second period to the gamne. Stephen Stadelmann put Orono into a 2-1 lead at 3:23 of the third period assisted by Greg Hooper. Newcastle kept put- ting the pressure on and it paid off, with, only 32 seconds left in the game. À centering shot from the cor- ner bounced into the net off a skate. Final score Orono 2 and Newcastle 2. In Orono on Saturday night the Bowmanville Toros Minor Atomns came to play an exhibition gamne with the Tennant Fuel boys. There was no scoring in the first period despite some very close scoring plays at sekason both ends. Trevor Lomnp-- scored assisted by Gk, Hooper at 3: 10 of the secon- period to give Orono a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later Scott Williams banged the puck past the Toros goalie from a scramble in front of the net. Sean McKenzie and, Trevor Lomax assisted on the goal. Toros kept pressing and managed to get one into the Orono net at 8:31 of the se- cond period.
