The six-day tour covered îItnsive forestry prac tices froim southern Finland ta the Artic Circle including visits ta local tree nurseries, planta- tions, logging aperatians and a pulp mîll near the Soviet Barder. Other points of interest in- cluded a visit ta the world famaous Marttiini kaife and equipment development facilities and a tree breedîng station. The purpose of the tree breeding station is ta produce faster growing species fromt genetically improved seeds. Somne interesting species resulted in the formation of pine trees w?,ith yellawv needles and trees with branches grow- ing downwards. There is niothing quite similar ta this in Canada. An the logging aperatian we saw a mobile waad chipper do thte complete operation on the site. There is nothîng wasted. Every part of every tree is uised for something and it was told ta us that an entîre towni with a population of ap- proximately 5,000 is heaîed from the steamn produced from ,vood chips. The country of Finland is quite simnilar ta Northern On- tario. Il is covered with vast tracts of timber and a small population. Event though we travelled ta the Arctic Circle il was -not unlike, weather in North Bay in the month of August. Finland is not alI trees. We also saw local sites such as remndeer native ta Lapland runnning wild in herds, beauitiful niatural springs, and handlicrafts such as the ittala Glass Warks. At al l imes, wve were treatedl royally. Sa- mneane commrrented aon the tour that when a Finlander does sameting, he does it wvell. This is quite evident in their outlook on life, friendlines-s, kindcness. generaosity and forestry. We thank aur hasts alang with the F7inland Traide Com- mission for a miemorable ex- perience and look forward ta further contacts with aUr nlew' Finnish friends.
