There was an excellent response to the four $25.00 vouchers awards as well as to visits to Santa at the Showcase Co-operative, the hay rides and the serving of free chili on the Main Street. Last weeks winners of the four $25.00 vouchers were: Marj Lowery, Jim Ard, Don Scott and Catherine Mudd, all of Orono. The draws continue this week with another four $25.00 awards to be drawn late Saturday afternoon. There is also a free movie being slated for the Town Hall commencing at 2:00 p.m. and at the same time free baby sitting services are to be provided. , The serving of chili on the Main street was thought to be a novel idea by many who stopped by to partake of the spicy tidbit along with a bun. Be sure to fill out a frece coupon this week which are available in al downtown stores. You may be a winner. Council to review garbage cost method Although council supports the issuance of a contract to Regional Reclaimers for gar- bage pick-up and disposal in Orono and Newcastle and did so. again on Monday by a recorded vote they did sup- port a motion by Councs. Hamre and Taylor that a review be undertaken as to the setting of rates in the two centres. E. R. Woodyard first com- mented that it did not seem fair and proper the way the costs have worked out to the individual taxpayers and that consideration should be given to a unit charge rather than determining the costs on the assessment. Last week at the general purpose committee meeting the commiîtee accepted the tender of Regional Reclaimers having an in- crease of72 percent over the last contract. The tender price was still some below the (Continued page 9) D and E Wood buy Orono companies D and E Wood Industries Ltd. of Mississauaga has pur- chased the assets of four companies belonging to the Orono Group with three of the companies located in the Village of Orono. The four - Wilberforce Veneer and Lumber Co. Ltd. of Wilberforce, its Curvply Division in Orono, Nesting Furniture of Orono and the Plydesign division of Orono Realty Ltd. are included in the purchase. The four com- panies have been in receiver- ship since August. The purchase was made from the Receiver, Clarkson Co. Ltd. of Toronto, for about $3.5 million. D and E Wood have been r j Citizen of the Year Award ceremony The Town of Newcastle are holding their Citizen of the Year awards ceremonies this Friday evening, December l4th at the Lions' Centre in Bowmanville. The ceremonies commence at 7:30 p.m. and al are invited to attend. Eleven awards will be presented this vear. United Way Over the Top According to Bob Stone of the Whitby-Oshawa- Newcastle United Way the 1984 campaign has gone over the top by a substantial amount. Final figures are not as yet available but according to Mr. Stone the target of $1.728 million has been surpassed. It is also pointed out that there has been a great growth mn giving i the Town of Newcastle this year compared to other years. The United Way provides funding for a total of thirty- eight agencies in the Whitby, Oshawa and Newcastle areas. Present Prof. Squair Book to Clarke Museum Ray and Mabel Goode of Orono have presented a copy of the recently reprinted Prof. Squair book pertaining to the history of Darlington and Clarke Townships to the Clarke Township Museum and Archives. The book was reprinted by the Newcastle and District Historical SOciety as a Bicentennial project. Lights Being Installed Along Highway 115 The final installations are being completed in new highway lighting along the area of new construction of highway 115 and 35. The installations are in the areas of development along the highway. We are really moving into the big times with lighted highways and underpasses plus a barrier down the centre of the black strip reported to have said about 300 jobs will be preserved by the transaction. Effective February Ist, 1985, a re-organized com- pany will be set up, it has been reported. Sales which have been run- ning at about $1I million an- nually are expected to rise to about $52 million for the group in 1985, 40 percent in exports to the United States and the balance in Canada and in the Caribbean. D and E wood is a manufacturer of business fur- niture and specializes in wood and paper laminating research and development. E. H. Samuel, former owner continues with the new firm. He still owns and operates Veneer Products in New Brunswick. Mr. Samuel stated that D and E Wood Industries in- tends to conminue operation in Orono and there is expec- tations of expansion. He said he was sure the new company would be a great asset to the community. He said he was pleased tht the change-over would main- tain employrment in the area. The Orono Group of com- panies started back in 1949 when Mr. Samuel moved a couple of hand-operated presses to what was known as the old Sausage Mill down over the west bank at the cor- ner of Mill and Main Street. At the time Mr. Samuel was producing seats and backs for nesting chairs with the full operation being hand- powered and on a couple of fevels in Ihe old frame building. The equipment was moved from the basement of the present Specialty Paper Product building in Bowman- ville.
