4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 19, 1984 On Dec. 8, 1984, The Mat- thews and Hill Peewees travelled to Manvers to par- ticipate in their tournament. In the first game we met the Oshawa Little N.H.L. Blackhawks. We had met the Hawks on two previous occa- sions this yéar the results were 2-2 and 1-1 deadlocks. However this time Orono broke the ice and won out by a 7-1 count. Blaine Souch drew Ist blood just 18 seconds into the game when he received a nice pass from Brent Osmond, skated over the blueline, then let go a hard wrist shot which handcuffed the Hawk's goalie. Not to be denied the Black Hawks retaliated with a goal of their own just 2 minutes and 13 seconds later. David Sheriden made the score 2-1 when he outhustled a defenceman and made a diving shot which caught the lower left hand corner of the net. Todd Gray picked up the assist on the play. From this point on, Orono completely dominated the play. David Sheridan picked up his 2nd goal of the game when he hustled into the cor- ner to get Todd Gray's pass and fired a low shot which trickled into the corner of the net after hitting the goalie's skate. 3-1 Orono. Jason Adey opened the se- cond period when he picked up Blaine Souch's rebound, circled behind the net and fired a hard low wrist shot which rang off the post and into the net. Todd Gray and David Sheridan broke free at the 3:00 minute mark of the 3rd period. David passed to Todd who in turn faked a pass to Dave, then fired a blistering wrist shot which beat the Hawks goalie on the glove side. With Orono 5 - Newcastle 4 Monday, December 10 saw the Hamilton's Insurance O.M.H.A. Midgets host their area rivals from Newcastle and win a cliff hanger by a score of 5-4. The first period saw the local lads find themselves down 2-0 on goals by Newcastles Fred Millson and Jeff Van Haverbeke. With 3:22 left in the period Orono's Paul Henry cut the margin to 2-1 with assists go- ing to Richie Dupe and Steve Lycett. The second period saw the local lads come up with two unassisted goals by Paul Henry for a natural hat trick. The first assisted bv Jim Wood and Richie Dupe, while the second saw Paul give it that extra effort scor- ing short handed assisted by Jim Wood to put the local lads ahead 3-2. In the third period Orono just 1 minute and 24 seconds left, Blaine Souch received a beautiful pass from Jason "Jumbo Burger" Brachvogel broke into the clear and let loose a wicked wrist shot which found the mark. 6-1 Orono Jeff "Granny"' Hartwig upped the count to 7-1 when he tipped in Todd Gray's shot with just 14 seconds re- maining in the game. David Sheridan earned his 4th point of the game with an assist on the play. Brent Osmond, Craig Nemis, Jason Major and Mike Goodmurphy played strong games defen- sively for Orono. By winning their lst game Orono advanced to the A side and met up with a strong team from Ops Township. The first period was scoreless with both teams getting their chances. Brian Rodd opened the scoring early into the second period when he fired a high shot to the glove side which found the mark. This goal came from some slick passing by Blaine Souch and Jason Adey. Just 15 seconds later David "Shifty" Sheridan stole the puck from behind the Ops net and spotted Jeff Hartwig open. Jeff slid David's pass underneath the Ops goalie to make the score 2-0 Orono. Not to be denied Ops came back however and scored 5 unassisted goals to win the 3rd period and the game 5-2. This however was a. hard fought match and the score was not indicative of the game. Goalies Billy Todd and Shawn Hardy were real stan- douts in this tournament for Orono. Jason Brachvogel played defence for the tour- nament and didn't look out went ahead 4-2 with Jim Wood putting it between the pipes assisted by Scott Mc- Cullough and Richie Dupe. The local lads then seem to stand around thinking the game was in the bag, mean- while Newcastle gave it that little extra effort coming up with two goals by Troy Foster and Fred Millson with his se- conçi to tie the game at 4-4. With time running out Orono's David La France broke by the Newcastle defence and with some ex- cellent second effort put one by a startled Newcastle goalie with 0:04 seconds left on the clock to give the local lads a big 5-4 victory. The Mayor of Mississauga "Hurricane' Hazel Mc- Callion dropped the puck at centre ice providing a ceremonious start to the game. The game was hilarious, with comedy stunts throughout. For example goals were awarded to the first person to "notice it" regardless of who scored it! John Allan Cameron manag- ed a hat trick and Brian Good also scored several times. A crowd of about 500 enjoyed the game and CFGM's own giant bull who gave out helium balloons to the children. They each had 3 chances in the shootout but Robin was vic- torious with a shut out, and was awarded a CFGM Shootout Medal. Robin was also selected as the Most Valuable Player.
