SOL WAY The "series" oen downtown and what makes if work wilI have to waif. Two reasons. There's at least one other item I have to unburden myself of before the "Season" swings into high gear. The other is that perhaps if 1. wait a bit longer l'Il accumulate aIl the angry letters from people who disagree with me and besides they neyer cared much for me by Larry Solway in t he first place and who cares what that big-mouth has to say. anyway. Whew! Thaf was a mouthful. Let me be the flrst f0 go after the Christmas Grinch, fthe Mrs. Grundys whose thin- lipped disapproval otf everything fhat is fun inakes life bearable, if you'rethe member of an ascetic order of monks thaf is. The Christmas Grinch 1 *refer to is the voice that is heard every year proclaiming sanct imoniously (although wif h some sincerity I guess) that "Christmas is just f00 commercial". I cas> hear them ail now. "Christmas is Peace on Earth and Good- wilI. It is NOT buying fhings and making the world a safe place, for the retail business". l'm. fed up wifh it alI. I was, fed up with the. great Stan Freberg, making a buck l'm sure, with his once-famouIs "Green Christmas". For those to young to remember the high point was a singing commýýcia1jingle to the tune of a well-know carol. It went: "We wish you a Merry Christmas, We wish you a Merry Christmas We wish you a Merry Christmas And please buy our beer." Let me be serious. Christmas is ail the things the prayerful, thoughtful people say it is. But it is also a time for gift giving. Certainly no one complained about the gifts the Three Wise Men brought. If you think that "it's flot the value of the gift it's the thought that counts," I suggest you check the price EHATS OFF TO ... Neyer mind what gold would coSt, even in those preinflationary times. Maybe they should better have brought a little cake or a card. Some legend that would have made! Following The Star carrying a congratulations rhyme on a piece of cardboard. Gift giving has always been a reflection of celebration and or caring. In olden days you reflected the size of your caring with the opulence of your gift. Which suggests that the frankincense stores must have rubbed their hands in a varicious glee. We rarely hear complaints about commercîaîizing bir- thdays or weddings. The big- ger !hle gift the greater the kick. Why is it only at Christmas that we start mouthing unotuons words about the "spirit",of giving. Is it terrible Io be given a gift- wrapped red convertible for Christmas? Is it sacrilege to suggest that Santa.represents everyone's yearnings for a material representation of love and remembrance? Is if wrong to creaf e a smile court esy of Mattel or Chanel or General Motors? On the one hand we hail "Enfer-, prise" as the engine of our economy and the spice in our social structure; on the other hand .ve condemn if for being praise of The Temple of Mammon. Giff giving is part of everyone's heritage. Jews use Chanukah to give money or gift itemis. Other cultures do celebrate the Saturnalia (which is why Christmas is celebrated when if is) with revelry and the exchange of giff s. Neyer mind the sociology The Orono Fish and Hunt Club held their annual meeting and election of of- ficers for 1985 at the Orono Town Hall on November 25th. President Wayne Sargent chaired the meeting, starting with the business and then proceeding ofi f0 the elect ioni of officers. The following are the. new ex- ecutîve for 1985: lesson. If may be good for business (which I still don't think is the Eighth Deadly Sin) but is also is great to make people smile, to get whaf they have Ionged for, coveted, yearned after or yes (horror of horrors> envied. Whether it is a bicycle, or a computer game, or a gift cer- tificate fe, attend the Marigold Dinner Playhouse (snuck that one in) - give and enjoy giving. The Mrs. <run- dys can praff le on about "Commercial" While I still have paper left 1 wîll from time to time do this: Item. Last week's column in this space. If is NOT Advice and Consent, it is ADVISE AND Consent. Item. From recent local newspaper ads. A well- known restaurant special: "Chocolafe Moose". <Well maybe it really is a variation on the chocolate bunny, only bigger). Item. From another restaurant ad. "Complet e dinner in- cludes desert". (1 wonder if thaf is with or withouf the sand?) Item. My favourite. A review of "Mass Appeal" praised the older priest who could "il licit" ail kinds of emotions. (Listen, who am I to question whaf priests do in their spare fime?) I trust newspapers fo Iearn to speli. So I can't forgive. But I do forgive the restaurant that did its own sign: "Jue Anne Salad".. (Maybe she works there.) More of' this rambling whenever I collect a few more.
