March 20. 1985 t j s - rono 1(oug" hley Tykes winners of yet another tournament On Monday, March 11 itn, Orono Roughley Tykes were on the road to Omemee te participate in a teurnament. They have won the cham- pionship for every tourna- ment they bave entered and this one was no exception. The team came home well deserved champions again. Orono's first game was with the Ennismore Leafs. Ennismore scored the first goal at 6:47 of the first period. Orono was a lîttle Islow getting started but once tlhey did there was no stopp- ing them. Somer West scored at 9:56 of the second period assisted by Jonathan Bur- nhamn and David Swan. One minute later Andrew Burton popped one in the net assisted by Jamie Shetler and Brian Hogenhout. The last goal of the second period was at 4:07 when Jamie Shetier slipped one past the goalie assisted by Shawn Broome and Scott Ransberry. The only third period goal was by Bryan Haines assisted by Gordon Wilkinson and Simon -Weagant. Bryan Haines and Steven Sargent shared goaltending for this game and did an excellent job. Orono 4, Ennismore 1. Orono's second game was with the host team, Omemee. The first period saw a lot of action. Both teams were play- ing a very defensive game and as a result no one was able to -score. Orono's Somer West assisted by Greg Knox scored the only second period goal. - Things got rolling in the third period when Jeff Good- murphy scored assisted by Greg Knox. Omnemee camne back and scored their only 'Matthews, goal at 5:34. The remaining goals of the game were al Orono's . Jason Lawrence assisted by Owen Taylor, Jamnie Shetier assisted by Jeff Goodmurphy and Jason Lawrence, Somer West assisted by David Crozier. Final score - Orono 5, Omemee 1. The championship game was with Newcastle. What a gamte! Both teams seemed te be evenly matched and there was a lot of action in both ends. Newcastle scored in the first period. Orono wasn't able to connect untîl Somer West, unassisted, scored at 10:42 of the second period. Both teams really moved trying to get the tie breaking goal. Fînally, and what a relief for the fans, Jason Lawrence, assîsted by Jamie Shetler and Somer West got the winning goal. Steven Sargent played a super game, in net for Orono. Orono 2, Newcastle 1. The Tykes had a rest on Tuesday and were back in ac-, tion Wednesday, March l13th when they travelled to Oakwood. This was another excitîng game with a lot action in both ends. Orono scored at 4:45 of the first period when Somer West took a pass from Jonathan Burnham and David Swan. Oakwood tied it up at 7:10 off the second period. Orono came back at 6:27 'when Somer West put one past the goalie on a pass from David Crozier and Gordon Wilkin- son). Oakwood came right back again at 5: 10 and tied the gamne once more. The third period was packed full of action and it looked as if the gamne was going to end in a tie. Then with one minute left in the gamne some good passes' from Jamie Shetler and Somer West got the puck to Jlason Lawrence who flip- ped it in the net. Steven Sargent played another fine gamne in net for Orcno. Crono 3, Oakwood 2. Oakwood came to Orono the next night for the second gaine in this playoff series. Oiakwood scored late in the first period to give themn the lead. They came back again at 9:00 in the second period to give themselves a 2-0 lead. A minute later Jeff Goodmurphy on a pass from Simon Weagant and Greg Knox put Orono on the score board. With 1:10 left in *the period Andrew Burton tied up the gamne on a pass from Jeff Goodmurphy and Somner West. Both teams came out flying in the third period. It looked again as if this would end a lie gamne but Oakwood got the puck a 3:52 and agan at 2:33 to give them a 4-2 win. The Orono Tykes played a fine gamne and Steven Sargent played another good gamne in net. I must mention at this time an omission from the Port Hopie tournament report. Steven Sargent was chosen the miost valuable player of the first gamne, Somer West the mnost valuable player of the second gamne and Jason Lawrence the most valuable player of the third game,. m Hil PeeWVees win two of three Newcastle tournie Newcastle 3, Orono 1 On Friday, March l5th Orono travelled to Newcastle te participate in their tourna- ment. The Matthews and Hill boys came out of the blocks with a flurry and opened the scoring at the 1:33 mark of the opening period. Todd Gray won the faceoff cleanly te David Sheridan. David fired a hard slapshot which the home team's goalie kick- ed out. Jason Burnham was Johnny on the spot and fired in the rebound under a sprawling goalie. Orono then quit skating and allowed Newcastle to score 3 unanswered goals to win the match by a 3-1 counit. Goalie Billy Todd pîayed a strong game despite the loss, with Jason Aday, Jason Brachvogel and Brian Rodd hustling the whole game. ORONO 3 - PORT PERRY 0 StilI stinging from their loss Orono took their frustra- tions out on Port Perry in a make up gam e after Frankfort failed te show up. The first period went scoreless. Jeff "Ganny" Hartwig opened the 2nd period when hie skated in unmolested and fired a hiard wrist shot which caught the top corner glove side. Jason Burnhamn found the ,mark just Il seconds later when hie fired in David Sheridan's rebound between the goalies legs. The Matthew's and Hill boys kept the pressure on and Jason Burnhamn again slap- ped in David Sheridan's re- bound to up the ceuint te 3-0 Orono. Mike Goodmiurphy earned the assist when he b reke up the play just inside the blue line and relayed it te David. Todd Gray, Craig Nemris, blaine Souch and Jason Ma- jor really put eut te help their team te the victery. Orone then advanced te the Cen- sulation chamfpionship gamne against the Oshawa Red Wings. Oshawa Red Wings 3 - Orono 2 The Matthe ws and Hill beys ran eut of gas in the,,3rd peri od against, the Red Wings ef Oshawa and relinquished a 2 goal lead te lese the Con- solation final. Orene eutplayed their op- peinents in the first twe pe rieds with Tedd, Gray drawing lst bleod at the 6:45 mark of the epener. Todd un]eashed a hard wrist shet which caught the top cerner glove side. This goal was unassisted. Jeff Hartwig up- ped the count te 2-0 when he uncerked a high wrist shot after receiving a nice pass from Mike Geedmurphy. Oshawa feught back te tie the match and forced over- tirime. At the 3:09 mark of evertime the Red Wings pot- ted the winner. Shawn Hardy played an oui standing gamne in goal for Oron)to despite the loss. Left wingers Jeff Hartwig and David Sheridan were really digging the whole gamne. Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms caught up in busy schedule 1 'q On Wednesday, February 27~, Little Britain Came te Orone for the final playoff game. Despite a fine effort by the whole teami, the best the local beys could manage was a tie game 2-2. Both teamns managed one goal in each of the first twe periods but neither team couIld score in the third period. Back on February 2lst Orono skated te a 4-2 victory over Bewdley. Dustin Reid had a terrifc game scoring al four Orono goals. A great checking job by Scott McAllister, Stephen Stadelmann and Tyler Adey kept Bewdley's high scorer limited! te only one goal. Chad Vandam and Robin Leth played super in net for Orono. Dustin scored one goal. in the first period assîsted by Scott McAllister. Although Orono trailed 2-1 at the end of the first period they tied the game midway through the second period, Dustin from Tyler Adey. Dustin scored two more in the third period, one goal unassisted, the other goal assisted by Bradley Minnis. Although Dustin got all four goals it was a fine team effort against a team that had won 7-3 the previeus game. Final score Orono 4, Bewdley 2. The following Saturday nîght Millbrook came to tewn for another playoff game. Millbrook continued to out luck Orono as they picked up a loose puck with 54 seconds remaining on the clock to win 4-3. Orono scored two goals in the first period, one by Dustin Reid assisted by Shane Jones and Trevor Lomax scored assisted by iim Partner. Millbrook scored the next three goals to take a 3-2 lead early in the third period. With 4:26 to play Jim Partner scored unassisted to tie the game.
