Man in Hospital An R.R. 1 Port Hope man is in stable condition in Toronto General Hospital after a tractor he was driving turned over early Saturday morning. Port Hope man wins Canada Challenge Roger Harness, sailing master at the Port Hope Yacht Club won at the first leg of the annual CanAm Challenge. The race, held an- nually between the Port Hope Club and its sister yacht club in Brockport, N.Y., took place Sunday after about 20 Brockport craft pulled into the Port Hope harbor. The 12-day strike last month by 15,000 Ontario Hydro workers cost the public utility about $30 million, Hydro figures show. The work stoppage, which ended May 17, shut down Hydro's nuclear facilities. Extra coal purchases for the thermal generating plants ac- cunt for the largest share of the costs associated with the strike, the figures show. Modern sports breeding grounds for violence Bryn Leonard, a physical education teacher from England and on exchange at Campbellford District High School stated that modern sports was a breeding grounds for violence. He was speaking at the school's annual athletic ban- quet. He said, "all is not well in sports" even though stan- dards of play has i proved and the level of s kilîs are higher. By Jennifer Garland. The Canada Student Employment Centre of Bowmanville declared June 24 - 28 'Hire a Student' Week. Festivities for the week included a homeowner blitz with al services provid- ed by students, the serving of coffee and donuts at Fiesta Donuts in Bowmanville to celebrate cooks, a fashion show at Henry Street High School in Whitby put on by unemployed students, and a car wash sponsored by the Odd Job Squad at the Bowmanville Memorial Park in Bowmanville. Proceeds of the events were received by unemployed students par- ticipating in the planned ac- tivities. To date, the Canada employment office in Bowmanville has received 494 registrations, 203 of those registered have received regular placements and 47 have received casual 37 percent now involved There is growing number taking part in the recycling program of household gar- bage in a pilot project in one sub-division in Whitby. The number of homes tak- ing part has doubled from April 30th to June 1lth and the number of 440 is expected to ride further. Health Council under budget The Durham Region District Health Council was under budget by an amount of $13,000 for its year's operation. Total expenditure for the Council for the past twelve months was $188,335 which funding is provided by the provincial government. Mr. Tom Cowan was honoured at the recent an- nual meeting after having put in two years as chairman of the Council. Six charged with welfare fraud Durham Region has charg- ed six welfare recipients with fraud in connection with the improper collection of more than $14,000 in benefits. Social service commis- sioner, Doug Johns, said, "this is an object lesson to prevent others from doing the same thing." Whitby undertaker gets jail term A Whitby undertaker has been sent to jail for 15 mon- placements. This compares to last year's registration of 613 with 177 of those registering receiving regular placements and 55 receiving casual placements. A spokesperson from the Student Office in Bowman- ville said students who register are encouraged to look for a job on their own as they can't place everyone. To date, the employment office has secured positions for students in the following areas: steel manufacturing plants, construction, waitress/waiter, babysitting, lawn maintenance, nurser labour, etc. they have also received numerous applica- tions for the Federal Govern- ment's SEED Program. Effective July 2, the new hours of the Student Employ- ment Centre in Bowmanville will be 8:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. ths for stealing $61,550 which 94 pensioners had set aside for their funerals. Cobourg firm gets contract Partak Limited of Cobourg has been granted a contract in the amount of amost $2.5 million for the construction of the Harwood - Fish Culture Station near Rice Lake. The Fish Culture Station will annually provide up to 800,000 lake trout and brown trout for stocking in Lake Ontario and some inland waters. The recent contract is for phase two. Phase one is to be completed this July. Youth Start program funded $1,511,483 has been ap- proved for Sir Sanford Flem- ing College in Peterborough for its Ontario Youth Start centre. The program is designed to help the most disadvantaged young people in the com- munity acquire the basic skills necessary to gain employment. The co-ordinator of the program said it was en- couraging and refreshing to see a priority given to the disadvantaged youth in the area.
