This'station has mnade ,a great contribution to the local economy throughout its con- struction and offers gýreat potential for the fuiture. Studies indicate that ini ten to fifteen years we wiIl need Darlington's power for new industry, not only in Durham East but throughout the pro- vince. This project must be con- tinued. To stop it now will only resuit in increased costs to'Ontario Hydro and to elec- tricity users in the future. 1 would like to miake note of the fact that Clarke Museum and Archives in Orono will be receiving sup- Local firefighters Eight Town oof Newcastle firefighters who have recently attendied and successfully conpleted the St. John's Ambulance First Aid Course port from the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture. How is the new cabinet sbaping up? To my mmd, the abilities of, Peterson's cabinet leaves the political future of our pro-, vince in an interesting state. Wby? Tbe new cabinet is a blend of a few experienced MPP's and a fair number of memnbers wbQ were only juýst elected tbis M#y 2nd. The ex- perienced members are usecl to tbe discipline of being in opposition wbile the newcomners will be baving dif- ficulty getting used to being an MPP, let alone a member of cabinet. Let's look at a few ex- amples. The Hon. Robert Nixon L oone of 'àhe experienc- cd members of the cabinet. Nixon, son of Ontario's last Libera premier, had servec as leader of is party for ter y eairS. 1 believe Bob is going to bave a difficult time in the at Park montbs ahead trying to balance the bigb-spending program, announced by Premier Peterson witb tbe need to maintain our pro- vince's good credit rating witb tbe bankers and to keep our deficit in line. As well as being Treasurer, Bob bas been 'assigned * responsibility for the Ministry of Revenue, and to lead the government forces in the Legislature. Bob is Peter- son' s trusted rigt-band man t and wjll be calleçi to give bis * advice on a variety of mat- S ters. This meanïs that over tbe 1 coming days Bob will bave b is bands full and will bave a. difficult time meeting al bis commitments. r Anotber experienced member of cabinet that we will be bearing a lot from is t Sean Conway. As Minister of Education, Sean is responsi- ble for introducing the sen- sitive issue of extendedA fun- ding for Roman Catbolic higb scbools. Wbile ini Op- position, Sean was an infl4m- matory speaker. 1 can only e hope be will curb this tenden- cy now that be is a member of cabinet. 1Another provocative speaker in Peterson's cabinet is Jack RiddellI. Jack is well known for bis brusque off- the-cuff remarks thai can sometimes wound more than beal. Peterson's cabinet is very small. A number of ministers have had to double up their responsibilities - a fact that may make the Peterson government appear efficient but will mean that ministers will have little time to con- sider the details of wbat eacb department is up to. When Frank Miller, was Premier, he appointed a larger number of ministers to cabinet to ensure that special. issues, such as the environ- ment, taxation and women 's issues, got the attention they deserved. Finally, Premier Peterson is calling for a review of the Miller government's activities fromn the beginning of May until the end of June. Tbis revîew is of direct concern to Durham East riding because it will mean a re-examination of the capi tal commitment to Bowmanville hospital.
