Hay was onle of the subject s of Glengarry, Ontario's Sports Hall of Fame 1985 Induction Ceremony held .Iuly 10 in Williamstown, Ontario. Hay was born March 7, 1885 in Glengarry County to parents Mr. and Mrs. John Hay. His father was among the Scottish emigrants to set- tle in th~e Gleni Sandfield area some 20l0 years ago. After public school, William Hay began working /in Montreal. Anxious to par- ticipate in sports, he joined the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. lin 1904, Hay at 19 won his first track races, the Summer Handicap 880 and mile in the Montreal program. In 1907, he entered the Amateur Athletic Federation of Canada mile in distance run- ning. He was a bronze medal winner. The same year, at 22, Hay entered the world cham- pionship snowshoeing events and finished third. The fotllowving year, Hay was the world champion. Hay repeated this record in 1911. At the last M.A.A.A. mneet, September 11, 1912, WV. G. Hay was the winner of the greatest aggregate points and the gold rmedal for the best season work. William Hay died at age 61 in 1946. He was the formner secretary-treasurer of the Toronto Art Gallery after a successful business career in Montreal. Hay is fondly remembered by a number of famnily memibers who have subse- quently settled in this area. They are the following: wife Dora Hay. formerly of N.ewcastle, now deceased; sons, Bill of Ottawa, and Bud of Newcastle married to Jean Logan, formerly of Orono; and daughters, Charlotte, formerly of Newcastle mar- ried to John Rickard;, Madeline of Newcastle, mar- ried to Robe-ýt Benson; Beverly of Bqwmanville, married to Sam 'turner; and Dorothy of Collingwood, married to Hugh Allîn. "'Agricrews at Work" on many area farms You may' have nloticed an "Agricrew at Work" sign along area roadsides this summuer. The markers are part of a successful student wxork project that is again in full swing, throughout the province. Ag-ricrew,, a summner pro- gram sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, attempts to provide farmers with an inexpensive summer labour force while at the sanie time creating stu- dent employment. Agricrew began in 1978 and is now in its eighth year of operation. FaTmers pay $90 a day to have a four-member crew on their farmi for a full eight- hour day. Crews provide their own lunch and transpor- tationi. The Agricrews haýve beeni on the job for about a rmnth now performning such jobs as haying, hoeing, weeding, painting, pruning, and barn cleaning. Four Crews are located in York and Durham Regions. Perhaps you know somae of them? Two Crews are located at Uxbridge: one consists of Shawn Cowan, Brian Renaud, Kevîn Davidson, and kay Beach, and the other Uxbridge Crew consists of Esther Giles, Kim' Hazelwood, Ryan Rieck, and AnnMarie Ginn. In everyone's life there cornes a time when an embar- rassing incident happens. 1, unfortunately arn the type of person who seems to get into more scrapes than humanly possible. I don't know if t's "-ecause I act impulsively, or Scause my brain whirs ahead _or Iags behind or maybe because 1 have a good sense of humor and can laugh at from the film The Legs of the Lame to be broadcast on myself .. . .sometimes. - there was the time when working at a local restaurant 1 was busily dlean- ing the men's washroom, on- ly to have a man enter close the door, turni around and see me co ming out of one of the cubicles. - then there was the time, while being a very conscious waitress, 1 noticed a purse sit- ting on a table just vacated by twç women and now oc- Global Television sometime Canada's Global1 next Nýovember as part of Bell Series.' cupied by two men. I snatch- ed the purse off the table, tore outside and charged after the receding car. The purse actually belonged to the present occupants, whose wives had gone to the ladies room. - about the time when quite proud of my agility at being a waitress and handling six plates at a time, I sailed up to the table with an armful of wares, stopped on a dime and deposited the man's toasted western right in his lap. - about the time when at a Wendy's Hamburger joint, I marched ahead of my part- ner, opened what 1 thought was the outside door and stepped into the closet. - then there was Florida and after many practiced shallow dives in which my derriere always floated on top, 1 finally gave up in ex- haustion and hung mny armns over the edge of the pool. Two fellas on the opposite end were !pýying mie undivîd- ed attention and I was of course quite flattered. Then 1 realized that my mother's gesturing at the other end was only to tell me that the top of, my bathing suit was entirely down on one side. - joining the Orono Fair beauty contest on a dare, when still in my teens. I wore my sister's heels which made me stumble, her dress which 1 could neyer in my wildest dreams hope to MIl out and of aIl the ten contestants, ... I came last. - the riverboat ride in Florida, being daring both ini attempting this ride and in- wearing an off the shoulder T-shirt with no over-the- shoulder-boulder-holder underneath.- Everyone was splattered and I was drench- ed. The whole world could see 1 didn't have the makings for a wet T-shirt contest. - talking to someone and have spit emerge through the huge gap in my front teeth. - working the express desk in Loblaws and having to ring for a price check. The norm here was to hold the ar- ticle up over the heads -of al the customners in order that one of the parcel boys could see what it was. In this case a huge box of Kotex on special that week. Red would be too mnild a word for the colour of mny face. - being onfly-thîrteen and already a clown, 1 hired on for picking cucumbers. As was my downfall aready at the time, 1 was hippy and plunked myself down in one of those narrow hampers they used at the time. Weil as luck would have it, my hips were jammed into this basket and itook a bit of doing to remove myself .. .. ail on his timne and then the owner had the audacity to fire me. - crawling through the basement window in a skirt at the Big Boy's residence when he tardily did lçot remember we had a date.1 My long leg caUght on the window silI, whîch broke and 1 feIl with a resounding crash into the laundry tub, ail legs, eyes and skirt.i1 looked up and there he was watching me. That must have been the time he decided 1 needed looking after or maybe he simply felt sorry for me. - perhaps with age l'Il learn to settle down.and act without incident, but 1, doubt it.
