Orono Weekly Times, Weduesday, August I4th, 1985-3 Photo By Jennifer Garland. 'lebrate Mom's Kit chen, ownership change reforms in the rules that govern the legisiature, 1 decided to pass up the chance to sit on the Committee on Procedural Affairs that is looking into this question. 1 believe it is more impor- tant- for me to be involved with the discussions of the Energy Committee to do what 1 can to keep the Danl- ington project on line. Another committee meeting during the summer months -will discuss en- vironmental issues. Concern over the proclamation of the "spilis bill", along with the passing of sound regulationts by' the 'Miller governent before its defeat in the Legislature, has brought the question of handling hazar- dous wastes into the public eye. The fact that Monday was a holiday didn't make mat- ters any better for witbin a wink or two we seem to be back at the regular chores. -1 imagine Tuesday was a wind-down day as we com- pleted some of the odds and ends that have been banging around the office for the past few montbs. This ac- complishment did, bowever, make us feels somnewhat relieved as these particular chores were now out of the way. Wednesday must not have been too exciting for memory doesn't recaîl what actually did bappen so at this point we shall Ichalk it down to a day of relaxation. Tbursday had been set asîde for birdwatcbing and this we did accomplish spen- ding the morning and Most of the afternoon travelling through the southernpart of Hope Township an d hav ing a leisurely dinner at the Welcome Court Motel and Restaurant. Friday was also planned and t was the day to scrape paint off thefront side of the house and prepared for a new paint job. It so happens that 1 have been taking one side of the house each year to paint 'i~is schedule has been in- t',..--pted over the past two years r esulting in some car- 1 blame it ail on the weather and the boiling sun on Friday that the paint still hangs on the front side of the bouse. There will be other years and the shrubbery does bide a lot of the concernis that are expressed. The last part of the week was restful with the exception of a couple of bours nailing battens over siding and realiz- ing that although 1 do have glasses for reading music at a certain distance, to view prin- ting going through the press and, of course, for reading 1 would need another set if 1 was to take up nailing as a profession. Nothing really exciting over the week other than oveheainga conversation that babies are more deman- ding today than in years gone by. This information did corne with some authority and l'mn not about to pass it off lightly or just as idle talk. 1 think the appearance. of our two mnonth old grandson possibly supports this comn- ment. When in cornes Billy so does a mechanized rocker'af- fair and an attached music box. With the first whimper you have no problem. Crank up the mechanized rocker, pull the string on the music box and the modern baby puts a smile on his face and general- ly dock back off' to sleep. A,ý I recaîf this type of equipmrent was not available years ago and 1 do wonder it is, out of necessity thu(i o- day's babies are more dcuon-, ding. Sam at Queen's Park MPP's Study Separate keeping a close *watcli Schools, Free Trade debate about the fui Ontario's Legislature is busy throughout the year whether the house is sitting or not. MPPs s it on committees that examine buils, the work of ministers and questions of a general nature. Often, committee debates are where the real business of governing our province take place. The Legîslature's Social Development Committee bas been sitting this summer, and bas received a lot of media at- tention from the public hear- ings it is conductinig on ex- tended funding to separate schools. So far it appears that the conduct of the MPP's sit- ting on the committee has received more attention from the media than the briefs presented by the public. A key concern presented to the committee is access to separate schools by non- Catholic students and the hir- ing practices of the separate school system. Progressive Conservatives believe that a solution that is both fair to al students and teachers, while sensitive to the integrity of the separate school system, can be worked out. Another committee cur- rently sitting is the one that looks at the record of the Ombudsman's Office. This committee examines thc Om- budsman's yearly report and makes suggestions on the im- provement of public access to governiment. A newly-oigpiized com- mittee tîlat wifl be meeting this summer is the Select Comniittee on Economic Af- fairs. This group will be look- ing at the various aspects of free trade and its impact on our province. Written briefs froni individuals, groups or organizations are welcomed by t his committee . As you know, this summer .1 have been busy with the business of the Select Com- mittee on Energy. 1 have been [ on the ture of the Darlington Generating Station. Recently 1 criticized Hydro plans to bring in elec- tricity from Manitoba when we have so much potential generating power here in On- tario.
