He's Canada's oldest active pilot, and dwring 1985 Fýe's had a lot of ups and downs. 1 first met Dick when he was crowvding 90 and stili flying out of the Brantford Flying Club. At the time, the club was planning a big bash for his upcoming birthday Like everyone else who meets Dick, 1 found him in- spiring. He's in better shape then most of us and you wonder how he's pulled it ýoff. -1just take care of myself," saîd Dick. "I love flying, and stay in condition for it. Every time I go up there, it's like being on a magic carpet." He demonstrated a few dailyV exercises he does, such as toe-touches, knee 'Jerks and twists. He doesn't f oot around, he'll do a hundred or more of each of these warm-ups. He also is an advocate of T"ranscend1ental Meditation, which among other things is supposed ta release energy. In Dick's case it sure does. He's vital and dynamic. But early this year the roof felli n on Dick. He turned 91 in February and when he went for his annual licence renewal, Transport Canada wvouldn't pass him. They suspended his licence pending further tests! This was a real blo)w for Dick. On top of that his wvife died. She had been hospitalized for a number of years and he went ta see her daily, but her illness had caused him arguish and he'd relieve the strain a bit through flying. But the fur soon started to fly around the ÏBrantford Club. The pilots, especially the younger ones, feit the suspension was unjust. Discriminatory. Andy Hamilton, Dick's friend and flying buddy, wvho's a kid of 60, was clearly upset. "They've been trying ta get Dick for years," he told me. -They give him tougher tests than the rest of us. Theyre af raid that if something happens they'll be blamed because they passed him. But that doesn't make sense. Something could go wrong wNith any of us.',, Andy went ta work on an appeal. Th~e Canadian Owners and Pilots Association got into thef ray. Let- ters wvere wrtten, calîs were made. It paid off. Early in, July there was joy in the camp. Dick received a registered letter saying the decisioin had been reversed! Once again, he is Canada's oldest ac- tive pilot!
