10-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 6, 1985 From Around the Region and area To probe fatal gas ex- plosion The National Energy Board has called a public en- quiry into the natural gas ex- plosion that resulted in the death of a Lindsay man at a construction site in north Oshawa. The explosion also dug a 35 foot wide by 8 foot deep crater and sent a ball of fire some 300 feet into the air. Rail overpass to cost $8.9 million The Federal government has announced it will provide an amount of 3.96 million for the construction of the Park Road rail overpass in Oshawa and Gary Herrema, Regional Chairman states the works are expected to start early in 1986. The province is expected to provide $2.585 million, the Region of Durham $2.115 million and CP Rail and af- fected utilities are to provide the remaining $300,000. Liquified Natural Gas Plans Consumer's Gas has pro- vided a three-part report as to their proposed $100 million liquified natural gas plant on 442 acres in Haldimand Township. The report and plans were presented at an Open House meeting recent- ly. Opponents of the LNG plant state the report does not contain sufficient infor- mation and that not enough time is being given to study the report and plans. Hydro makes 400 acres available It has been reported that Ontario Hydro has agreed to make some 400 acres of land available for industrial development on a sale-lease basis. Such an agreement has been sought by the Diamond Triangle Committee representing four municipalities in the Port Hope area. The Diamond Triangle sought the agreement as a possible site for a Toyota car manufacturing plant in Canada. The Hydro land was originally purchased by Hydro for the development of the Wesleyville Generating Station, now mothballed. The land is located between Lakeshore Road and Highway 401. $30 Million needed for regional roads Gary Herrema states the Region of Durham needs some $30 million to bring regional roads up to an ac- ceptable level. Herrema has been critical of both local councillors and the province in not spending enough money to upgrade the roads. Herrem-a sought sup- port from the Regional Councillors for the 1985 budget to spend $500,000 of extra regional monies annual- ly to catch up' on road repairs. Herrema's sugges- tion did not gain support from fellow regional coun- cillors. Named federal farm- ing advisor Mayor Garnet Rickard has been named to the Federal Farm Credit Corporation's advisory committee. The mayor will be expected to attend two to three meetings a year while other work will beconducted from his home in Bowmanville. The committee is compos- ed of ten members from across the country and Rickard is one of two from Ontario. PCs will finish Darlington Plant La:ry Grossman seeking the leadership of the Ontario Progressive Conservative party told a party meeting in Oshawa last week that a re- elected conservative party in Ontario would see the com- pletion of the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. Grossman said the liberals at Queen's Park know that the Darlington Plant should be completed but due to the accord with the NDP are making issue for the NDP of the Darlington Plant. Agree to operation of Bewdley Arena Hamilton and Hope Townships have come to agreement as to the joint operation of the arena in Bewdley and will turn over management to a committee of six township residents as well as two council members from each council. The Townships will set the budget. Although advertisements have been placed for volunteers for the committee only two people to date have provided their names as members of the committee. Grant two more Regional Councillors The provincial government has granted two further regional councillors who will represent, one for Ajax and one for Whitby. The an- nouncement was not made in time for the November 12th elections and as a result the manner in which the members will be elected has yet to be decided. $1 Million estate bequeathed to Trent An estate valued at $1 million bas been bequeathed to Trent University in Peter- borough by the estate of the late Gilbert Bagnani of Hamilton Township. The estate consists of a 200 acre farm and a 1836 home known as Vogrie along with an endowment fund to main- tain the property. The estate will be held in trust during the lifetime of Mrs. Stewart Bagnani who will have use of the property during this period.
