Not OnIy for Honeymooners Up until lasi Saturday we had îhought that Niagara Falls and ils great naturai at- taction was set aside for honeymooiicrs and sightseers. But this is flotthe case. Thousands upon thousands of biýrdwNaîchers are atîtracted 10 the Faits dur- ing November and pari of December t0 view large rafts of ducks as well as great hordes of gulis. Both Bill Bunting and I1 were simply amazed ai the crowds ai the Faits on Satur- day last when we visiied the Faits wiih a group of eîght from Peterborough. We were two novices among competeni birdwat- chers and had luttle knowledge of what was to corne othef than we had been told 10 brown-bag; a lunch and take a thermos of somnething hot t0 drink and thiat the Peterborough group wouid meet us ai the north intersection to Orono off Highway 115 ai 5:30 a.m. At ihis point we were 10 foliow them which we did. At 7:30 ail disembarked from iheir vehicles ai the Hamilton harbour in the frigid cold to view the firsi congregation of ducks, and, ibis procedure coninued weli into the afiernoon until we were well upstream of the Falls. Having visited Niagara- On-The-Lake a number of limies 1 was welt aware of the location of the lake and river and 1I\was rather puzzied as was Bill when we left the main road to the river 10 drive the quaint and small streets in the Village. This puzzlement soon enid- ed Tony from Peterborough quickly got oui of his car t0 point oui a Mocking bird per- chied on top of an oak îree and then pointed oui a- Tufîed Titmouse. Boîh birds were niew sighîings for me and my inieresi was taken with the Tiimouse which 1 foliowed dlown the smal laneway some two hundred yards 10 gel a good sighting of the bird. On turning back îo the group there had 10 Jbe close 10 fifîy birdwaichers lined Up along the -sireet sighting the Mockingbird and House Finch feeding at a house feeder. t neyer ihoughî much about it but t did wander where everyone 'rad corne from iail of a sucit, The word was oiL. that a Red beilied Woodpecker had been sighted on Olive Street and att jumped back into the cars to make a line for Olive Street and low and behotd ihere was the Red bellied Wo.odpecker, &nother first for both Bill and 1 and these ihree birds certainly made for the trip in itself. i was then off to the Niagara River with gulis and duks being the order of the, day. At what they called the, bird hot spots parking was ai a premium and ai one loca- tion there mnusi have been ai leasi 150 birders lined along the bank peering mbt îhousands upon thousands of guils flying back and forth withi the sole purpose of pic k- ingl oi one rare species and the Franklin Cuti was certain- Iy on tire minds of many., Youi could look down the riveri and it was jusi a sea of white flecks passing back and forth across your binoculars. 1 wondered who could pick oui one single bird from thai mess of birds. Again iî was Tony who came up 10 Bill and 1 and-ask- ed if we had seen the Franklin. Upon saying 'no' he said there was one down in' the gorge travelling up and down the bank of the river and wiîhin a minute had pick- ed it out and described where it was in order îhaî we were able, to sighi ihe bird. Ariother firsi for the iwo novices from Orono.
