4-Orone Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 27, 1985 Dean Cox nets three for Orono Shoppers Orono Shoppers Drug Mart Oldtimers travelled to Newcastle for a return match on Sunday, November 24th with the Buster's Oldtimers. Unfortunately the Orono team came out on the short end of a 5-4 score. The Shop- pers Drug Mart team could not get untracked in the first half of the game as Busters came-out flying, jumping out to 4-0 lead. Orono started to roll in the second half as they narrowed the score to 4-2. Busters increased their Ilead to 5-2 but Orono came storming back to narrow the lead to 5-4. Shoppers Drug Mart pulled the goaltender with a minute left but couldn't get the equalizer. Dave Shetler Omemee Drug Mart old was the big gun for Orono ed to go to with 3 goals all assisted by and Little "Scotty" Burton. Dean Cox skate and 1 netted the other Shoppers narrowing Drug Mart goal. Orono fine Sunday night at Orono again and Arena, Shoppers Drug Mart -goal (to f, hosted the Little Britain wîth a 9- Oldtimers. The Orono team Drug Mai started in a hole in this gaine game wer as Little Britain scored-just 32 Dave Shei seconds into the first period "Scotty" to take a 1-0 lead. Shoppers MacLeod, Drug Mart stormed back with doug Cani four straight goals to jump pers Drug into a 4-1 lead halfway road next through the first period. Lit- Newcastle tle Britain narrowed the score to take on to 4-2 early in the second then to Lit period. At this point Orono day night t had another four goal out- Britain Oh burst giving them an 8-2 lead. e match. Shoppers Drug mart seem- ouOronoOrono timers sleep at this point Britain started to they chipped away the score to 8-5. lly started to skate' added one more nish off the game -5 win. The Shop- Mart team hit the week travelling to Sunday morning the BF Peelers and tle Britain on Sun- o take on the Little Idtimers in a return M&H PeeWees in back to back games ORONO 7 - BEWDLEY 4 On November 16, 1985 the Matthews and Hill Peewees travelled to Bewdley and skated away with a 7-4 win. The Orôno boys fell behind early in the first. period when Bewdley struck for 2 quick unanswered goals. Matthew Stevenson finally got the Matthews & Hill gang going when he slapped one in at the 2:54 mark. Jason Ma- jor and David Sheridan did the spade work to earn the assists. Bewdley upped the count to 3-1 to close out the period at the 13 second mark. Orono finally took control of'the match going into the second stanza when Matthew Stevenson notched his second goal of the game on a solo ef- fort. Just seconds later Brian Rodd tied the game at 3-3 when he converted Mike Goodmurphy's pass into a nice goal. With just 5 seconds re- malning in the period Todd Gray put Orono ahead 4-3 after being set up by Matt Stevenson. Brian Rodd tallied his se- cond goal of the game ai the 13:04 mark of the last period after Matt Stevenson and Tyler Gibson combined some slick passing to set up the goal. Todd Gray popped in his second marker to put the Orono team ahead 5-3 at the 10:18 mark. Orono kept tremendous pressure on late in the game with David "Shifty" Sheridan scoring on a breakaway after being set up nicely by defenseman Brent Osmond and Matt Steven- son. Matthew Stevenson put the icing on the cake just seconds later when he notched the hat trick and a total of 5 points. Todd Gray and David Sheridan picked up the- assists. OMEMEE 8 - ORONO 5 On Tuesday, November 19, 1985 last year's divisional champs Omemee came to town and handed our team an 8-5 defeat. Omemee usually have a strong peewee team and this year is no exception. Although the Matthews & Hill boys held them evenly for the first 2 periods they just couldn't hold back a fired up Omemee team in the third stanza. The visitors struck early in the game with Steve Lucas banging in two quick goals. Orono fought by however when Tyler Gibson went in all alone and fired in a hard wrist shot which found the mark. Omemee then went ahead 3-1 at the 2:51 mark. Just 41 seconds later Orono again battled back to make it 3-2 when David Sheridan deflected in Matt Stevenson's wrist shot. Blaine Souch won the faceoff cleanly to start the play. The Visitors closed the period out with a goal of their own to make it a 4-2 game at this point. The Orono boys then won the second period as they started skating and checking with authority. Matt Stevenson opened the period up with a backhander between the goalie's legs after Mike Goodmurphy set him up. Blaine Souch again won the faceoff to gain the other assist. Matt tied the game up at 4-4 at the 7:39 mark when he fired a hard wrist shot from deep into the corner. This goal came after tremendous pressure around the visitor's goal. Blaine Souch and David Sheridan combined to earn the assists on the play. Blaine Souch put Orono in the lead for the first timne to close out the period. Blaine's power play goal was a hard low snap shot. Matt Steven- son set Blaine up for his one with David Sheridan digging the puck over to Matt. The third period however proved disastrous for the home team as Omemee pumped in 4 unanswered goals to win the contest. OMEMEE 5 - ORONO 4 On Thursday, November 21, 1985 Orono travelled back to Omemee to get their revenge but came up just a lit- te shy. The local boys played a tremendous game in a game that could of went either way. Billy Todd played with great confidence for the Orono team and came up with some big saves between the pipes. This game was a hard hit- ting, fast skating affair right from the opening face off. Orono drew first blood at the 4:47 mark when Todd "Chipmunk" Gray banked in his own rebound. David Sheridan and Jason Adey combined some slick passing to set Todd up. Omemee closed the period out with one of their own. Todd opened the second period with his second goal of the game which came as a result of some nice 3-way passing between Matt Steven- son, David Sheridan and Todd. Omemee again bounced back to even it at 2-2 to close out the second period. Orono continued the see- saw in the opening seconds of the last period when Matt Stevenson poked one in on a power play. Brent Osmond and Blaine Souch did the spade work to pick up the assists. Omemee then hit for two quick ones to go ahead late in the game to make it a 4-3 game. With 1:35 remaining it was Todd Gray scoring during a power play. Matt Stevenson set him up nicely and Todd broke in all alone and pulled a picture perfect deke before sliding it in to the open cor- ner. The heartbreaker came with just 22 seconds left as Tri-County Midgets take easy> win from Fenelon Falls team On Monday November 18, the Orono Tri-County Midgets were at home playing against Fenelon Falls. Orono played a strong game from start to finish beating the visitors by an 8-0 score. Scorers for Orono were David Little 2, John Cowan 4, and Tim Mercer and Rob Jerome each had one goal. Assists going to Scott Irwin 2, David Little 3, Darren Lewis 3, Darren Dennis and Rob Jerome each had one. Sebas- tian Hoffman playing an ex- cellent game in the Orono net recording his first shutout of the season. On Monday November 25, the Orono Tri-County Midgets played an exhibition game against Bowmanville. The Bowmanville boys came in and played a strong game beating the Orono boys by a 6 - 1 score. The Orono team were out-l4it and struggled through the first 2 periods. Finally at 5:33 of the third period John Cowan Rut Orono on the scoreboard assisted by Scott Irwin and TinMercer. Tennant Fuel Atoms take big win over Millbrook entry The Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms defeated Millbrook by a score of 7-5 on Wednesday November 20th. The local. boys out-scored their op- ponents 3-1 in the first period. Dustin Reid scored assisted by Scott Williams and Tyler Steve Lucas of the home team beat Billy Todd who had no chance on the play. Final score 5-4 Omemee. If the Matthews and Hill team play like they did tonight, they should win their fair share of games. It was a great effort. A special mention should be made to 5 Orono defensemen who played their Adey at 2:37. Tyler scored assisted by Dustin with 3:27 left in the period and Scott Williams scored assisted by Tyler a minute later. Millbrook played a strong game but Chad Vandam and defensemen Brad Minnis, Craig Nemis, Jim Partner hearts out Jason Adey, Jason Major, Mike Goodmurphy, Brent Osmond and Tyler Gibson. Jeff Hartwig played his best gaine of the year with David Sheridan who took some hard body checks show- ing what he's made of by playing tough for the whole game and not backing off an inch. and Adam Stephenson kept them off the scoreboard until 8:42 of the period. Both teams were unable to score in the second period un- til Dustin Reid scored a pair, his second goal of the game came with 2:29 on the clock assisted by Scott Williams and Bradley Minnis. With only 39 seconds to play Dustin scored again, assisted by Scott Williams to make the score 5-1. The boys remembered the last game against Millbrook when they lost 6-5 after blowing a 5-1 lead. Cameron Esler scored 7 seconds into the third period assisted by Brent Gates.
