Ames and Chase recomn- mend-that parents relax and enjoy their pre-schoolers. They point out that most young children learn to wvalk and talk without programmi- ed instruction. Research in- dîcates that even with rigidly planned effort, you cannot significantly speed up the development of the basi;c human behaviouirs. Dr. Gesell at the Yale Clinic of Child Developmnent vigourously trained one of a pair of twin s in stair- climbing. Theother twin was kept in a stair-free environ- ment. At thie end of six weeks, the non-trained twin \vas introduceý,d to stairs. Shie climibed as ,vell as her sister. When it comnes to the con- troversy over heredily versus environment, the authors lean to the side of heredity. Environmentalists insist that children are like dlay to be shaped as, you wish. Amnes and Chase reveal "a fuller respect for heredity and believe that the general shape of his behaviour are pretty well determined, by genetic forces and that what you cani do is always limited by heredity factors." The early chapters discuss why people push their children and why they should nol, but the core of thie book is positive in tone because further chapters discuss what parents can do. The 6 dos are: 1 . Know the characteristics of each age. 2. Know, personality types. 3, Know infancy. 4. ,Keep your child healthy and wýell-nourished. 5, Help your child to know himself. 6. Read to them. The fact that the authors dev oted an entire chapter to recading- reinforces my convic- tion that books are important to pre-schoolers.
