4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 18, 1985 J ' Orono O.M.H.A. Novice take, a lose, a tie anda win The scores improved as the week went on for the novices. Millbrook visited on December .t11th and made it tbree out of three in the season series. The boys tried but Millbrook just has too mnany shooters. On Saturday December 14 Omemnee visited and skated with us to go home with a 0-0 tie. Orono had won the previous two games against Omemee and if they had brought the shooting sticks they could have taken this game too . But Omnemee played well enough to deserve a share of the points. The next day we headed nortb to Manivers. Orono kept pushing forward and were finally rewarded near the end ,of the period when Daryl Reid slipped one into the corner of the net. Drew Hansen dug the puck out of the corner and fired it across the net to Jeff Hughes whose shot rebounded to Daryl for thie goal..The second period saw some fast end toend play and some fine passes by the Jamie Shetier, Mark Foster and Aaron Staples line. We entered the third period still leading 1-0 and our good pressure was rewarded mid- way through with an in- surance goal. Manvers had the puck deep in our zone. It was shot up to Henry Kaldeway by Andrew Burton and Henry fired it across to Michael Landers in ful flight at our blue line. Michael went aIl the way and -beat the Manvers goalie with a hard wrist shot from about twenty- five feet out. Manvers kept trying and Chad Maartense had to make a big stop on a breakaway to preserve the shutout, his second of the weekend. He was capably assisted by Michael Dreslin- ski and Ben Deremo. Ben played a strong game in his first start on defense thîs year. Brandon Meadows and Paul Woods provided strong support on the wings. This was Pau's first start at right wing this year as he swtched with Ben. M&H Pee Wees to face off with arch Orono Il - Bwavle4 On Saturday, Decemnber 7th the Matthews and Hill Peewees travelled to Dar- ington Arena and skated away with an imnpressive 11-4 victory. Orono took control early in the first period in this exhibition match and neyer looked back. The top scorers for the Matthews and Hill crew were Blain Souch with 5 goals, David Sheridan and Todd Grey with 1 goal and four assists each, Matt Sephenson had 4 goals and 1 assist, Jason Adey added 4 assists, Jason Major chipped in for two assists and Jeff Hartwig had one assist. The defensive foursome of Brent Osmond, Mike Good- murphy, VBnian Rodd and Jason Major played strong gamnes and gave goaie P'illy Todd plenty of protlection., Mllbrookï 2 - Orono 0 For the first ime this year the Matthéèws and Hili team 'vas handed a goose egg and deserved it. Millbrook came to town' and simply wanted to 'in the gamne a littie more than wve did. Although Shawn MEardy and Biil Todd played strongIy between the pipes to keep the score respectable they got lit- tic lp from their team- mates. When Orono did get their chances however but James Boyd in the Milibrook.goal shut them down with sharp goaltending- We had beaten Millbrook twce already this year and 1 thinkpe boys took the game toe lightly. It was a lesson weil leart. Not taking aaything away from the fine up Mlillbrook team, they deserved the victory. Orono 6 - Manvers 3 Stiti smarting from Iast week's loss te Millbrook the Orono boys took out thieir frustrations on Manvers. The big difference in this gamne %'vas the hitting. Manvers are a good skating club but 'Orono took away rival from the so uth their game with solid body checking and good team play. Tyler Gibson wasted no time whten he strippped a defenseman of the puck and sailed in unmolested and slid the puck into the far corner with the game just one minute old. Just 52 seconds Iater Matt Stephenson upped the count tu 2-O Orono whien hie con- verted Todd Gnay's pass into a, goal after some great pressure around the visitor's goal. Tyler Gibson ciosed out the first period after-lDavid Sheridan blocked a h ard slap shot with bis toe. TIyler pick- ed up the loose puck and skated the lengof the1!p ice to beat t(he Manvers 4goalie on the glove side with a ba ard The second perîod saw Iodd Gray score unassisted right from the faceoff. Todd made no mistakes as lbe broke free and pulled a nice deke before putting the puck away. Defenseman, Mike Goodmurphy eplacing an in- jured Jeff Hartwig notched bis first goal of the season at the 8:53 mark after being set up nicely by Blaine Souch and David Sheridan. 5-O Orono. Manvers did ftght back however and scored three unanswered goals to make it a 5-3 game. With just seconds remain- ing lu the game however Tyler Gibson potted the hat trick when he broke free along the boards and fired a low wrist shot betweea the oppesiag goalie's pads. Defensemea Brian Rodd aad Breat Osmond were par- tieularly predominant in the hittiag department and came ,up with somne nice dlean body checks te slow the visitors do'wn giving Shawn Hardy, good protection. Jason Major and Mike Goodmsurphy also registered somne solid checks to help thein team to a well-earnedî victory. Next league game secs arch rival Newcastle corne to town on Decemben l7th at 7:30 p. Thei first perîod started wiîth good end to end action and both teamis having somie ood scoingi chances. Wi th iover six Minutes gone by, Manvers gets a breakawý,ay and puts one past goalie Steven Sargent. Sommner Wýýest tied it up at 2:34 on a pass fromn Bryan Haines. Brian Hogenhout puts Orono ahead on a pass from Simnon Weagant and Jonathan Bur- nham at 1:38. Just one se- cond before the end of the first epriod Bryan Haines nets one assisted by Jeff Goodmnurphyý. After a luiy ýoft ast actio at the begînning of the se- cond period, Orono notched one at the 5:32 mrark by Jason Lawrence assîsted by Soml- mer West and David C'rozier. The, third period wýasý scoreless until 2:24 wh!en Sommer West slipped on in from Bryan Haines and Jeff Goodmurphy to makec the finalscore 5-1 for the homte team. The visitors opened the scoring at 5:46 of' the fir st period, then tallied again ai the 1:12 mark to leave Orono scoreless at the end of the first period. Oronio camne out flying in the second period and by the 3:17 mark Jason Lawrenice hiad notched one on a pass from Gordon Wilkinson and Sommer West. We really put the pressure on in the third period, look- ing for the tie or possibly to wiin. With 1:10 left ni the _gamte Jason Lawrence lets go and puts in another, this time assisted by Sommer West and Bryan Haines. "Way to mnake a corne back team!" Last but flot least our, goalie Stevecn Sargent did a first-rate job of' keeping us in the gamne making some very good saves. "Ex,ýcellent gamne team!"
