The six week, seven week, eight week and ten week study groups be- ing offered in Oshawa, Hampton, Port Hope, Cannington, Beaverton and Whitby reflect the community's request for specific programs for parents with teens and basic paren- tinig for young families. The workshops respond to specific re- quest from the community. Readers are invited to register for a six, seven, eight or ten week study group or a workshop on a subject of particular interest to themn. The choice is wide with something for everyone. STUDY GROUPS OSHAWA flabysitters' Training Course Young teenagers will learn how to be responsible and caring sitters. Each student will be required to complete six hours of practical work during the course. Making Changes - A group for adult children of alcoholics. The purpose of this group is to help children of alcoholics make changes in their lives by providing the needed information andsup- port. The first step in making changes is seeing the past and the presenit in a new light, and changing one' s feelings and behavîour with the support of others. The format wilI be short talks, videos and group discussion. Effective Parenting A discussion group for parents focussing on understanding children's behaviour and learning positive and practical skills for redirecting misbehaviour and en- couraging children. iving With Teens Th Iis discussion group will focus on understanding the stages of adolescent developmient, hlow to discipline in a sensitive way, effec- tive communication and how to en- courage teens to accept responsibili- ty. Building Your Child's Self Esteem The fostering of self Worth is a central challenge for parents and adults working with children. Par- ticipants in this study group will gain an insight into the underlying factors of self esteem and discover a formula for building a positive self concept. Strengthening Your Stepfamily This discussion group deals with the advantages and positive aspects of being a step-parent, adjustment issues faced by both parents and children in step families, effective listening, facilitating co-operation within the family and effective pro- blem solving. Leadership Training - Port Hope This course is specifically design- ed to trai n group facilitators for our parent study groups. I comprises one component of our "Parent Study Group Leader's Certi ficate." Positive Discipline - Hampton Participants of this study grou4 will Iearn how to help children develop self-discipline, responsPïl- ty, probeIn-olng 9 is ~and S esteem. The reasons why children misbehave and"specific techniques to help solve these problems will be discussed. How To Weather The Storm With Each Other - Whitby in this discussion group teens and parents will work separately and together to explore new options for surviving the daily difficulties in family relationships. Issues of Aduît Chiîdren of Alcoholics This introductory workshop will focus on aduit children of alcoholics' issues and how these issues affect relationships with others at home and on the job. It will be of interest to those who grew up in a family that was affected by alcohol, in one way or another, and also to those who wish tii know more about adult children of alcoholics' issues. Heîping Youth Resist the Appeal of Drugs This workshop for parents of preteens and teens will focus on developing an understanding of drugs and their effects; corn- municating effectively with your child about drugs and drug use, and helping your child make responsible decisions. Making Play Meaningful Beating the Winter Blahs - a prac- tical approach to child guidance through play for parents of preschoolers. Wh at To Do About Vour Chiîd's Misbehaviour Why do children behave the way they do? Why is raising chîldren 50 different today than years ago. This workshop will look at the reasons why children behave the way they do, and how Io use this information to redirect misbehaviour. Discipline Without Punnshnient lèractical ways to discipline effec- tively without using punishment. Personal Safety For Your Children "EverQ«ec ge .ernabuse free childhood." Learn what is child sexual abuse, to identify signals of abuse, what a child needs to hear in cases of disclosure and what prevention strategies we, as parents, can use. Parenting - Especialîy For Single Moms This workshop will focus on the advantages to be gained by being part of a single parent famiîy as well as introducing skills to deal with the problems of task and emotional overload. Ideas to help your children through their possible feel- ings of confusion, guiît and fear will be discussed. According to a statement by Lee Beech, president of the Newcastle- Northumberland Women's Teacher Association, negotiations with the Northumberland and' Newcastle Board of edcuation have been broken off. The two groups have been negotiating a new contract for the past 10 months and according to the Living With Teens - Cannington This workshop will introduce the topics to be covered more fully in a ten session study group which will be offered in the Spring. Parenting issues affecting parents of today's teenagers, will be discussed in- cluding: *effective communication, family atmosphere, selecting the ap- propriate approach to discipline situations, problemn solving and en- couragement. The last contract, a two-year con- tract, ended at the end of August 1989. The teachers are also asking for more equity as it relates to secon- dary school teachers-. Wage parity, allowances and working conditions are among the importnt issjies states a news release. A recent fact finder's report by Helen S. Finley recommends that parity with Secondary teachers be continued, Among some of issues is a transfer allowance for teachers of $1000 when they are transferred out of their Associated School1 Group and is in excess of 25 miles. The fact finder had no comment on this con- dition. In the matter of retirement gratuities the teachers are asking for the elimination of the $8,000.00 cap. The Board would seek tg, eliminate the retirement gratuity althogther.
