Tykes Do Weil In Season's First Tournansent Orono's two Tyke teams combin- ed forces and entered a Tyke Tour- nament in Newcastle, Friday, December 29th. Although we did not comne home with a champion- ship, we did come away knowing we had played some very good hockey agalnst some very good teams. Our first game had an early, 7:00 a.m. start. This game we won by a 4-3 score over Bowmanville's McGregor Hardwvare. The first period had no scoring but lots of ac- tion as both goaltenders put on a fine showing. Early in the second period Orono's Bobby Witheridge scored twice. The first assisted by Kyle Moore and Greg Bester and the se- cond assisted by Matthew,ý Reid and Andrewý Beacock. Late in the period Bowmnanville was finally able to get one past Orono's Michael Gibson. The third period has lots of ac- tion as Bowmýnanville got a goal early to tie the score at 2. At the halfway point of the period, Bobby scored again for Orono assisted by Brodie Hutton and Brad Copping. Bowmanville again came back to, score and lie things up. With 4 minutes left to play Orono's Bran- don Caruana put one between the pipes to give us the lead once mnore. Assisting were Jamie Parry and Brandon Hilîs. There were several more scoring chances but both goalies met the challenge and the final score was 4-3 in favour of Orono. In our second game We were mat- ched up against our arch rivais, Newcastle. From start to finish this game was a thriller. Orono's Bobby Witheridge scored early in the first period assisted by Tyler Robinson and Greg Shetler. Newcastle's Nicholas Stacey, (last season's scoring sensa- tion) came back to score two in a row for the opposition. Finally Bobby scored once more for Orono unassisted, to close the period in, a 2-2 tie. In the second period both teamns traded goals. Orono's Jonathan Black scored first, assisted by Jeff Thomnpson and Dave Lammers. Orono had the lead again for a short time, but Newcastle squeezed another past goaltender Michael Gibson. The second period ended in a 3-3 tie. The excitement peaked in the third period as the fans from both clubs cheered their teams on. The action was end to end and we were treated with some excellent goalten- ding. Newcastle managed to score twice early in the period, but only after Michael had kicked out ont rebound after another. Orono also had some great scoring oppor- tunities but just could not get the puck into the Newcastle goal. As the final minutes counted down,' Orono pulled their goaltender. The extra attacker helped keep the puck in the Newcastle end zone and shot after shot was kicked out by Newcastle's goalie. The gamne ended 5-3 in Newcastle's favour but it was a fine performance by both teams. It was a gamne we did not really feel bad losing- because we had played our best. Congratulations boys on a good showing in the tournament. A special mention to Michael Gibson who played super in goal, Jamie Parry who put out an awesome defensive effort and Bobby Witheridge who gave fine offensive effort with 5 goals for the day. If you boys keep up the hard work we are aIl going to be treated to somne excitîng hockey through the rest of' the season. Assisting on the play were Michael Gibson and Greg Bester. for Orono The second goal was by Greg Shetler with assists goingto Brad Copping and Paul J.anders. This two goal lead proved to not be enough, however, as Newcastle came back to score twice in the se- cond and then once more in the third. It was a good experience for our boys.
