G-rowing tGeraniums-A fun winter pastime January is the month to sow seeds for summer enjoyment of your own home-grown geraniums. With the holiday bustle now over thoughts do turn to spring and ultimately the home flower gardens. Geraniums are among those garder) flowers that do take a long time to flower fromn seed and it is a good choice to start them early in January. It helps the winter go faster if you have some hang-ups about winter. It was only in 1963 that the f'irst seed was offered for geraniumns be- ing one variety, Nittany Lion Redl. Since that timie other varieteý ies hae been developed now ranging up- wards of sxty. Geraniums are flot at aIl difficult to grow from seed but they'do také- time, between four to six months from seed to bloom. On average they do take some five months to- corne into bloom. .The seed is expensive but less ex- pensive than buying plants for plan- ting. The seed houses do have the scecd catalogues and these do have a good germination rate. It is recommended that the seeds be soaked for the better part of a day before sowing as they do have liard shell casings. Onc should use zts soilless mis as redi-miix or pre- mnix. lt allows oxygen to pentrate t() the tiny roots, is light and porous. Dameen the mix thoroughly, plant the seeds keeping them at a reasonable distance. Temperature slaould be in, the area of 72 to 76 F for.,germination and often the top o~f the refrigerator creates this temper ture for the germination. YouXan cover the -container with plastic to keep in the moistureo. Il - must however be removed when the seed begin to sprout. If conditions for the young plants are too damp it can promote a fungus known as damp-off and overnight you can tose the whole lot. The young plants can be grown under flourescent light about five inches above the seedtings. 1. The seedlings should b e transplanted w 'hen they receive their second growth of leaves and into a four inch pot.
