4-Orono'Weekly Times, Wednesday, Iury 31, 199 SPORTS Mini Soccer a new Town feature With the soccer season fast ap- proaching the Darlington Youth Soccer League have initiated a number of changes this year which will affect some of the many new soccer players in the Town of Newcastle. Children aged 5/6 and 7 who have not previously played soc- cer on a full size field will be enroll- ed in mini soccer which is a six a side game played on a much smaller feild. Most of the rules in mini soc- cer are the same as regular soccer but it is said to get the younger players more involved in the game. The League is also trying to form some invitational soccer teams for children eight years and older. These team members although not allowed to play on a regular house league team will be playing local teams but in an age bracket one group older than themselves. The idea is to get young players with soccer ability to get used to playing as a team and to eventually play teams from farther afield. These young players will also form the core of the select teams. Tryouts for the invitational soccer teams will commence on 14 March 90 and in- terested players should contact Wolf Geiger at 623-1356 or their local soccer convenor. A free referees clinic will be held in Bowmanville on 28 April 90. Young people aged over 12 in- terested in refereeing are encourag- ed to attend. Referees are paid a nominal fee for each game at which they officiate. Any questions regarding the up- coming soccer season will gladly be answered by your local soccer con- venor or any member of the Darl- ington Youth Soccer League. Roughley Insur. Tykes trade win with loss On Friday, January 26, the Newcastle Tykes were in town to challenge our Orono boys. The game ended with Orono shutting out their opponents by a 2-0 score. It was a close match all the way. The first period was scoreless and we were into the final minutes of the second period before Orono finally put a number on the scoreboard. It was Paul Landers, unassisted after a fine rush down the ice. The next and final goal of the game came midway through the last period. This time it was Greg Shetler slapping the loose puck into the opposition goal. Assisting on the play were Brad Copping and Kyle Moore. Playing a great gaine in goal and scoring a shut out was Bobby Witheridge. All the boys played well in securing their victory over our neighbouring rivals. On Saturday morning we were in Newcastle to play Bowmanville's I.D.A. Drugs Tyke team. Things did not go so well in this game. We gôt off to a bad start and finished with an 8-3 defeat. Bowmanville started things off midway through the first as both teams had some good scoring opportunities. Bowmanville then scored again late in the period to finish the period up by two. The second period also was all Bowmanville as they netted three more. Again it the third, Bowman- ville kept the pressure on scoring three more in a row. Already down by 8 goals, things were looking bad for Orono but as the period drew to a close, Michael Gibson found the mark and put us on the scoreboard. Assisting on the play were Greg Shetler and Kyle Moore. Just a few seconds later, Michael again beat the (up until then) unbeatable Bowmanville goaltender. Assisting were Jonathan Black and Greg Bester. As the period drew to a close, Orono scored once more. This time it was Andrew Beacock knocking the puck off the opposing defenseman at our blue line, rushing all the way down the ice and making a nice move to beat the Bowmanville goaltender. It was a little too late but still our boys played a very good game. It was a long game for goaltender, Matthew Reid, but still he made some nice saves. Aspecial mention as well to Paul Landers who put forth a good offensive and defensive effort. Keep up the good work boys! Next game this Saturday in Orono at 1:30 p.m. See you there! Orono Novice have a busy week-end On Friday, January 26th the Orono arena saw Orono Novice play host to the Baltimore #2 Novice team. The Orono players had an extra practice last week, one more than usual. Which showed out on the ice in their passing and skating abilities, as they defeated Baltimore 6-1. During the first period Orono scored the only two goals. Scoring was Steve Foster on a fine passing play by Jamie Richter and Jeremy Paren. Scoring the second goal was Orono's Alan Robb assisted by Bobby Witheridge and Andrew Reid. The second period was ust underway when Orono's Alan grab bed the puck and maneuvered it down the ice to score on a break away. Baltimore kept trying to get one past Orono's net minder Ryan Schoep, which they finally did. But this proved to be their only goal of the night, as the rest of the game was all Orono's. During the end of the second Steve Foster scored unassisted. Steve Foster then scored again assisted by Jeremy Pare and Kyle Beacock. The only goal scored in the third period was Steve Foster's fourth goal of the night assist going to Bobby Witheridge. A fine perfor- mance put in by Ryan Schoep, who stopped many shots, and all the goal scorers and those who assisted. Also playing an excellent game was, Kevin Copping, Murphy Irvine, Clint Hawkshaw, Mike Morrison and Jonas Bonnetta. After winning Friday nights game the players, coaches and fans felt very confident about their tourna- ment the following day. On Saturday, January 27th the Orono Novice team headed to Baltimore for an all day tour- nament. They were to play their first game at 10:00 a.m. against Cobourg. The first period saw Orono- coming out strong as they scored within the first two months. Scoring for Orono was Andrew Reid unassisted. Then during the last three minutes of play Alan Robb scored on a fine passing play by Andrew Reid. Unfortunately the, 2-0 lead did not last long as Cobourg came back on the rebound and scored two goals, one at 2:06 and the other goal with only 47 seconds left making it a 2-2 tie. In the last half of the second period, Cobourg scored the only two goals. Cobourg had a hot goalie, even though the Orono players kept trying to get the puck past him. There was no scoring in the third period just a lot of end to end hockey action. The final score was Cobourg 4, Orono 2. But the way Orono was playing it could of easily went the other way. Next game was at 2:00 p.m. against Port Hope. The players spirits were still high and it showed on the ice and on the scoreboard. Within one minute of play Orono's Bobby Witheridge scored with Andrew Reid assisting. Then at 8:54 Steve Foster put one in the net assisted by Jeremy Pare. With five minutes left of the first period Bobby Witheridge scored his se- cond goal with an assist going to Kevin Copping. The second period started off just as the first did with Steve Foster scoring on a break away. You could tell the Orono players were hot. But that didn't seem to discourage Port Hope as they kept on trying. Port Hope scored with two minutes left in the second. Orono came right back and with only 23 seconds on the clock Steve Foster scored on a passing play by Jeremy Pare and Alan Robb. The third period was just as ex- citing as the first and second. The Orono players could not be stopped as Steve Foster scored his fourth goal assisted by Jamie Richter. Three minutes later Orono's An- drew Reid scored his second goal assisted by Bobby Witheridge and Kevin Copping. Port Hope then came alive again and got one pass Orono's goalie Ryan Schoep. With only 6 seconds left of the game Mike Morrison scored the final goal. With the Orono players flying high on an 8-2 victory. The Orono Novice having won their second game, would now be playing for the "B" Championship in their third game. They would be playing against Grafton #2 at 4:00 p.m Unfortunately with all the confu- sion at the end of the game the Orono coach nor the manager received the game sheet. Therefore we are not sure who the goal scorers and assisters were at this game. What I can tell you is that it was a nail biting game, with both teams playing a strong game. Grafton would get on the scoreboard, then Orono would rebound back with a goal. This perforamnce went on un- til the end of the game, when the scoreboard read 4-4. As they went into overtime, the tension was high amongst players, coaches and fans. Orono and Graf- ton would start the play with their five players on the ice. After one minute of play each team would lose a player. It could of went either way but as it turned out with only four players on the ice Grafton #2 scored the winning goal. The Orono players came away disappointed on the outcome, but the team did receive a very nice looking plaque, which will be on display at the Orono arena. Con- gratulations to Steve Foster who received a trophy for most valuable player. At this time I would like to say to the players to keep your head and chin up and be proud of yourselves, even though you left Baltimore arena ,feeling like losers, everyone of you deserve a pat on the back for the excellent performance of hockey you displayed, you all came away winners. I congratulate you all, Ryan Schoep our net minder for a job M5a well done Ryan. And hats off to all the Orono players, Murphy Irvince, Kyle Beacock, Andrew Reid, KevL Copping, Bobby Witheridge, Ste Foster, Alan Robb, Mike Morrison, Jeremy Pare, Jamie Richter and Jonas Bonnetta. Absent were Clint Hawkshaw and Amy-Jane McAllister. Next Orono Novice game is February 2nd at 8:15 p.m. at Orono arena against Bewdley.
