FOR FULL TRAVEL INSURANCE Phone Wakefield Insurance Bill Bramah and his Ontario As 1 mosey around the count- tryside, 1 Iearn ail sorts of things you 'rarely learn at school. Ann Eckart was telling mie that feathers haven't nearly the insulating qualities that dlown has. Ann makes duvets. Those cosy comforters with a solid country look. The kind granny used to make. Granny knew what she was doing. She knew that the feathery down of geese is one of nature' s wonder insulations. Ann Eckart knows it too. She lives in the littie village of Jerseyville in Southwestern On- tario. When she and her husband moved to their country home on the outskirts of the village, they decided to raise a few geese. The flock grew and before long they didn't know what to do with ail the down they had. "We put a littie ad in the paper and the phone rang off the hook. We sold the down in no time. Somne of the callers asked for duvets, anid of course 1 didn't have aniy," says But it gave her an idea. In her native Holland, sewing is taught as early' as the first grade ini school. And a1th-ough she hadn't been sew- ing,- for years, she begani to learn the )rý'If sin ingad desi1gn need- ed to keep the light fluffy down in- side the coverings. It took only a few gifts of duvets to relatives to prove she might have a winner, and she started sellirg the duvets she made. Then she turned to designing and making winter clothes for handicapped children. "I saw a need for it," Ann says. "It's al made to measure and especially useful for those who have cerebral palsy or are confined to wheelchars." She demonstrated the insulating qualities of down with a gallon- sized glass bottle of pure down that was sitting on the huge table where she makes the duvets. She took off the top and had me plunge my hand inside. 1 felt heat immediateiy. That was because the trapped air spaces wvere hanging on to the heat from myN hand. That's the secet of down's warmth. It traps heat from the body. The last timie I saw them, the Eckarts had raised about 350 geese for what they were calling Downcraft Products. Ann was sell- ing duvets as fast as she could make them. And it takes 25 geese to pro- duce two pounds of down.' That's enough for one double-bed size duvet!
