But what was to follow was even more dramatic especially for this neck of the woods. It wasn't the fact of the presenta- tion of the proposed Newcastle on the Lake but rather the setting of the whole affair. Enter the front door of the Town Hall and Bell Hops are busy taking your coat and serving a great selec- tion of hors d'oeuvres. In fact the lobby -of the Town Hall was decorated as a hotel lobby with fur- nishings, plants of all descriptions and a Bell Hop at both shoulder with his tray of goodies. The reception was in great hands and prepared you for what was to follow. Opening the door to the stairway to the council chambers there sat a pair of lovers holding hands on a bench in an arbour and I'm not sure that the trees were not white birch. It made me hesitate for a moment thinking I had entered onto the privacy of this couple. Gaining some composure I had to ask "Is this before or after the wed- ding?" Thereply came "No this is a pro- posa". Sure enough that is what the whole afternoon was about ... a proposal. I must have been somewhat flustered because I even forgot to take a picture. Fortunately the cou- ple were later picnicing at the beach in the council chambers. On arriving in the council chamber we walked into Coney Island. The big semi-circular coun- cil table amassed with flowers from one end to the other. Tree plants, sand beach with sand castle, hot dogs, pop corn, ice cream. Tea and coffee from a silver service. It truly was a sea side resort . . . Newcastle On The Lake. Of course there was a boardwalk and stone pillars. I was even accused in using all my film on the sun bather at the beach. That really wasn't true. Driving home I had to think that it had to be the best show in Town for quite sometime. Of course it was not to be missed but it seemed unfortunate that more of the general public couldn't have seen the setting for the promotion as it stood at the Town Hall. To say the least it was imaginative and we would suggest we enjoyed it. If the setting for the event was long on imagination and creativity the proposal at the lakefront was very basic in form and brief. We can expect more detail in the future as the project forms up through the various phases of the planning pro- cess. The comments of David Crombie and his committee as to the pro- posal will be watched for with in- terest. Just a few words about the birds. Out in the country for the past cou- ple of week Horned Larks and Snow Bunting have been passing through in small flocks. And Art White from Bowmanville reports an Eagle on one of the concession roads south of Orono. It had what looked like a kitten in its talons but dropped the animal and flew off. And for those that might hear the Cardinals they have taken to their spring and summer call. Spring is on its way. Second drug theft at Memorial Potential dangerous heart drugs have been stolen at the Memorial Hospital for the second time in a week. According to Regional Police 10 glass vials of drugs used in cardiac treatment were stolen from a crash cart in emergency sometime Sunday night. A similar theft took place one week prior to the Sunday theft. The drugs could be dangerous if con- sumed by children or drug abusers, stated police. Anyone with information on either theft are asked to contact the Regional Police or phone Crime Stoppers at 436-8477. Letter to the Editor Regarding recent developments in our community and the beating of a child in public. A certain man was brought before a Judge and jury for beating a child in public. The Judge was a kindly old man approaching retire- ment. The jury were ordinary folk, very much like you and 1, people prepared to do their civic duty but hoping that it wouldn't take so very long. "So," said the Judge. "You are charged with beating a child in public. How do you plead," and the man said, "Guilty," "Ab- solutely guilty." So the Judge wrote it down, carefully. "Guilty of beating a child in public." He cross- ed his t's, and dotted his i's, and made sure of his punctuation. And then he asked the man: "Do you have anything to say, before sentence?" "Well," said the man. "Not really. Except, you see, I thought it was allowed." The Judge seemed surprised. The jury also seemed surprised. "Beating a child in public?" said the Judge, seeking an explanation. "Yes," said the man. "You see, I'm just a simple piper. And I've been away for some time. Upon my return I could not help but notice how the rivers and streams and lakes are little more then sewers. How the land is dead. How the forests have disappeared. How the beauty is gone. How the cities are sprawled thoughtlessly in every direction. How there is gar- bage everywhere. How the birds have gone away or have died. And the animals. And the fish. How the air is poison.ed. And how we must be fearful of the sun. When 1 asked about all of this, i was told more developments are planned, and that you can't stop progress. So natural- ly, I just assumed you do not care about your children. Indeed, i thought i might be doing the little tyke a favour if 1 spared him his misery before things get even worse. The judge retired then and there. The jury went home and didn't say word to anyone. And the piper wept. Bernie Martin Kendal, Ont.
