OronoWeekly Times, Wednesday, April 4, 1990-5 Vo problem On Saturday, March 24 the turned out to be the on Orono Tykes eagerly waited in the hockey dads. A fun game dressing room as they were getting was had by ail. ready to meet a rough team who Pictured above (-r) they had never played against Ref. Maartense; Mr. M before. As the Orono players skated Mr. Copping; Mr. R onto the ice they knew they had Bester; Mr. Landers; M nothing to fear as their opponents End of season Oronofyke update The following is a brief summary of the Tyke games missed over the last couple of weeks. On Wednes- day, March 21, Team 1 played Team 2 or J & M Custom Framing. Scoring for Team 1, or the Roughley Insurance Team were Mike Gibson from Greg Shetler and Greg Shetler from Paul Landers. Scoring for J & M Custom Framing were Jamie Parry from Brandon Caruana; Andrew Beacock from Jonathan Black; Jonathan from Andrew; Jamie from Brandon Hills and Andrew from Jonathan. On Friday, March 23 both tyke teams challenged their moms to a game. The result in both cases was most interesting and exciting to the fans. Those "well endowed" moms were a sight as they took to the ice in bail uniforms carrying bats and gloves. The moms found the tykes quite a handful but the games were close and a great deal of fun was had by ail. The next day the dads took to the ice and played the tykes. The tykes found the dads something of a challenge but still the scores were close and again a great time was had by all. This past Saturday, the first year tykes, closed out the season travell- ing to Grafton to play in their United County Ail Centres Day. They were matched against Bewdley and the game couldn't have been any closer as the teams played to a 1-1 tie. Scoring for Orono was Brandon Caruana unassisted. Bran- don was also picked as our M.V.P. by the opposing team. Greg Bester played a great game in goal to limit Bewdley to one goal. David Lam- mers was robbed of a goal at the end of the game as he scored just after the final buzzer. All the kids played well and it was a good way to end the season. The second year tykes played one of their rivals this season, the Bowmanville Skylight Donut Team. It was a close score to the end when 3 quick goals put Skylight ahead 7-4. Orono got off to a slow start as Skylight scored the first three goals. Then scoring for Orono were Tyler Robinson from Greg Shetler and Mike Gibson; Bobby Witheridge from David Lammers and Paul Landers. Bowmanville scored their fourth goal and Orono came back with two to tie things up. Scoring were Bobby Witheridge unassisted and Tyler Robinson from Jamie Parry. Just as things were close, Skylight poured it on. With two minutes left they scored three more goals. Although it would have been nice to have ended the season on a winning note the kids did all play a fine game and it has been a very good season. I would like to take a moment to thank all the coaches, players and parents who helped to make this such a successful season. Also a reminder of our end of season lun- cheon on May 5th at the ball park at 2:00 p.m. Please plan to attend and bring the entire family. See you all then! Council Briefs The general purpose committee is recommending to council that half- load restrictions may be used on Town Roads other than in the spr- ing from March 1st to April 21st. Walter Evans, director of public works, said the requirement was necessary should the Region pass a similar by-law and enforce such by- law to protect the conditions of their roads. He said this is being considered by the Region and the Town should be prepared if such happens. Evans said last year heavy trucks using Regional Road 3 almost totally destroyed the road and due to this the Region is considering a by-law that would empower the Region to implement half-loads during other times of the year. He said if such happens it would turn heavy truck traffic on to Newcastle Roads which were not designed to carry such traffic. This would cause considerable damage, said Evans. Counc. Stapleton expressed con- cerns over the by-law proposal ask- ing how it would affect services to the rural areas where heavy trucks were involved. Evans said there was provision for such services. The enforcement of the by-law would be carried out by the Ministry of Transportation who are equipped to carry out weight tests on the spot. AECB thumbs down baseline health study The Atomic Energy Control Board has stated that there is enough data available at the present time for a Baseline health Study and questions if such a study would be worthwhile. "Since data bases on cancer in- cidence and birth defects, along with other pertinent social and en- vironmental data, are already available to be u'sed for analyses on the status of health of selected populations in Ontario, a special "baseline" study around Darl- ington Generating Staton is neither warranted or needed." "In short, a suitable baseline already exists," states the AECB. Durham Region recently set up a Baseline Health Study Committee to set the guidelines for a baseline health study. It is expected to start this month to establish the guidelines. The AECB states that health- related information is now available from a number of sources. Registration is limited. Call (416) 983-9243 to register/info. Sunday, April 29, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. A paper conservation workshop will be conducted by Curator Mark Jackman.
