4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesqlay, May 2, 1990 Coed Basketball Champions at Pines Senior Letter to Edlitur Dear Mr. Forrester: The Red Shield Appeal is one of the main funding sources for The Salvation Armny's mercy work, both into our community and across Canada. it supports emergency food and shielter services, counisell- ing services, substance abuse pro- grams, correctional and justice ser- vices, senior citizens' programs, and 13 hospitals coast to coast. The public bas always been very generous in supporting our work. Our problem is to reach this public. If you could assist us for a couple of hours on the evening of Monday, May 7th, to assist with the residen- tial canvass in Orono, it would be of tremnendous help. If you know of a few people who could assist you, we could completely cover Orono. We. very much appreciate whatever support you can give. Please feel free to cail me (work 576-1103 or home, 436-1761) or Captain. R. Shirran- (623- 1761) or 623-5857) with any questions. God bless. We need to start being concerned for other people flot always ourselves. We would be in an awful mess if Jesus had only been con- cerned for Himnself. We would flot have the opportunity to accept Him as our saviour, nor would we be able to spend eternity with Him. Thank God Jesus thoughit about uis. Newcastle lIbrary to new quarters this fal The Town of Newcastle Public Library Board is very pleased to an- nounce that the Newcastle, village branch of the library system will be moving into larger quarters before the end of the year. This relocation will permit an increase in the size of the collection at the branch, im- proved access and services. The Board bas leased 4000 sq. feet in the new building at 50 Mill Street North and expects to open for service there by October. The Library will use the opportunities of the new space to provide a much more browsable layout for its col- lections, provide catalogue, access computer terminais for users, in-, troduce a story-hour programme for pre-schoolers and increase the numbers of books available, par- ticularly for children. Library Board Chairman, Jacob Vancler Schee, sees the location as a unique opportunity for improve- ment of library services in the village: "The Board is very pleased by Council's support of this pro- ject. t's an investment both in bet- ter library service and in the main street cf the village". The Library's location in the, Newcastle Com- munity Hall- bas been an excellent one over the -years but the interior space in two separated rooms ac- cessible onîy by stairs was becoming more' and more, of a limitation on excelent library service. The reloca- tion keeps the ibrary branch at the main intersection of ýthe village whil1e allowing for solutions to the" service problems. The new branch wl'be accessible both for wlte lchairs and baby strollers and it will have a book drop for after- hours return of library materials. Self-centeredness is a terrible thing. We are often more concerned with what we want to do than what our mates would like to do. Children are very self-centered they always want their own way and just as most aduits they feel that they are the most important thing and what they want they should have. Jesus said to prefer others above ourselves.* Relationships are impor- tant and in order to have good rela- tionships we have to work at them, this involves preferring others above ourselves. It's flot easy but it is rewarding and when everyone in the family starts to learn they can't always have their own way thats when the relationships start improv- ing. We ail have to bend a ittle more than we'd like to but the rewards are great, you feel super Jason Mercer, Aaron Staples and Jeff Darrach; (front row) Carnie McCur- dy, Barbara Whissen, Alana White, Andrea Hartmann and Amanda Garnett. knowing you have pleased someone else. Children have to learn this ear- Iy and it wiIl save them a lot of hear- tache later in life. Webster defines self-centered as "Selfishly independant, engrossed in one self; the centre around which other things revolve." James 4:14 says " You know not what shaîl be tomorrow for what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a littie time and then vanishth away." We are not aIl that important that we have to have things our way. We don't know what a day may bring so lets try and treat others as we would like to be treated and bring some Joy into our lives as well as others. Questions or comments? Box 179, Orono.
