Art Reid 694,000 senior households in Ontario to receive Property Tax Grant cheques The Honourable Remo Man- cini, Minister of Revenue, has announced that the Ministry recently began mailing the first instailment of the 1990 Prop- erty Tax Grant (PTG) cheques to approximately 694,000 senior households across On- tario. These cheques have a total dollar value of more than $200 million. "The Property Tax Grant for Seniors program is designed to offset municipal and school taxes paid by senior citizens who own or rent their homes and apartments," says Mancini. "This initiative reflects the Ontario Government's concerni for the well-being of the province's. senior citizens by making tax benefits available.". "We're really putting some- thing back into society in two ways," continues Mancini. "By providing seniors with the means to continue living independently, we become partners in a common focus - caring about the community. The skills and resources senÎors contribute are an immeasurable'asset." The maximum PTG interim payment per household is $300.00, with an average of $288.00 per cheque. The grant is payable in two instailments in the year. This spring instali- ment is an automatic payment. The second instaîlment is mailed ini the fail, after PTG applications submitted by seniors are processed. First- year recipients will receive their PTG applications in the fali to claim their property taxes or rent for the entire year. The mailing of the PTG inter- im grant cheques is staggered, to permit a continuous flow through Canada Post, and to avoid delays in delivery.
