The Hintons welcome visitors to their gardens for what turns out to be a great showing of the above along with other flowers in the Or'ono Public, School News Report Orono Safety Patroller Captain visits Ottawa by Amanda Haines On Thursday, May 24th, Friday, May 25 and Saturday, May 26th I went. to Ottawa for Safety Patrollers. Around 6:00 p.m. 1 went on a cruise on the Rideau Canal. There was a dance at 8:00 p.m. The next morning we had breakfast at 7:00, then the patrollers went to Science and Technology Museums. Next we went to the Government House for a Medal Presentation to Tammy Hentson, from the Gover- nor General. She received a bravery award because she saved a little boys li fe. Then lunch. After lunch was a musical ride that we went to. Dinner, then another dance. The next day was a parade past Parliament Hill. Then home. There were over five thousand patrollers there from ail over Canada. Ont Trip to Stoney Lake by Danielle Borremans Wednesday, May 30th we went Burleigh Falls to take a cruise on Stoney Lake. 1We took a one and a haîf hour drive early in the morning so we could get to Burleigh Falls.. When we arrived at Lock #28, we met our friendly guide Captain Phil. In the shallow end of the lake Captain Phil showed us a sunken island. It wasn't very big. We walked over a bridge and watched the lock operate. It filled up with water and a boat went through. He told us that way back people used locks and dams for log- ging. Now the water ýs used mostly for recreation. Soon we stepped on our two deck cruise ship, the Chippewa IL. We sat dlown and a girl gave us a life jacket demonstration. How to put one on and tie it up. Then the captain told us how to jump off. Then we had a snack break. On the cruise we talked and learned alot about Indians both Chippewa and Algonquin, about pollution, acid ramn, global warming and the biospere. AIl together we had three snack breaks and one lunch break. We cruised dlown Love Sick Lake and other rivers for two and haif hours. We observed alI kinds of dif- ferent sights like l8th Century buildings, chains of islands contain- ing mainly coniferous trees like juniper and pine. AIl of the islands had a limestone base and were covered with trees. We ended the cruise and drove to the Nepthol- mines. There diggers took tons of feldspar, and mill workers ground it into fine dust to make glass and sold it aIl over the world. The Pines Senior Public Sçhoo's "Jump Rope For Heart" event for 1990 raised $2,070. The jump was held outside on the pavement by the parking lot for two hours. During the jump there were refreshments and oranges handed out courtesy of Orono IGA and Burger King. More than three-quarters of the1 school participated. After there were awards for the most athletic skip- per, which went to Stephanie Childs, the most unique skipper was Roxanne Dezan, the most im- aginative skipper was Jarrett Hooper,-the most enthusiastic skip- per was Justin Hughes, the most outrageous skipper was Daryl Reid and the most- dignified skipper was Chris KMages. There was single rope skipping and double long rope skip- ping. There were also ice-cream fudgesicles on sale in the Industrial Arts window alI afternoon.,There were trwenty-two teanis of four to six people for the jump. There were buttons for everyone who par- ticipated. In alI, the 1990 "Jump Rope For Heart" skip was fun and successful. Look for more great news fromt The Pines in future. The Pines Senior Public School is back wth more interesting and ex- citing news which we know you will enjoy! on Tuesday, May 22, 1990 the grade sevens from the Pines left for their trip to Ottawa at 8:00 a.m. They arrived in Ottawa at 12:30 parm. and spent their afternoon. touring Ottawa. For two days the, grade seven students stayed at the, Carlton- University in Ottawa, wbich ail of the students enjoyed. The grade sevens enjoyed swimm- ing on T uesday night and the boat cruise dance on Wednesday night. On the third night we spent the night at -Queen's Univesity in Kingston. Tha t night everyone wenr to, the Celebrity Sports World in Kingston and enjoyed a night full of- roler -skating, dancing, and video games. Bus #2's song was "Elvira'" which everyone in the bus sang along with. The grade seven students were glad ro be home but they wish they could have had a longer stay in Ot- tawa and Kingston. This year the actors of the play, "Ms. Frankenstein's Monster'", worked hard to make this play a success. After three months of hard work, it finally paid off.
