Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, ,June 6, 1990-7 l-,aying on level fields, by Gord Milis A few years back, 'bumiper stickers' were the craze, and most people sported one on their car. One of the most popular read, "Aren't you glad that you don't get ail of the government you pay for." The recent trucker's blockade, staged at the various entry points in- to Canada, prompted my memory to recaîl that favorite bumper sticker. 'It was brought about through statements made by the Ontario Minister of Transport, Bill Wrye, and his Federal counterpart, Doug Lewis. Our schooling taught us to grasp the nature and functionî of metaphors, similes,,and analogies. If we can stili remember themi we begin to understand when politi- cians attempt to bamboozle people by the use of these literacy devices. Last 'week, both Bill Wrye and Doug Lewis, did their bit in misleading the truckers. In answer to the truckers coin- plaint regarding their U.S. counter- parts access to cheaper diesel fuel, Wrye assured them that'his ministry would introduce a program to audit U.S. carriers to make sure they are paying provincial fuel -tax! Surely, someone in bis ministry would have told him that such a program is already in place. No audit program can camouflage the fuel tax scandai in Ontario. Frightful provincial legislation bas allowed U.S. truckers, using their cheap diesel fuel, access to Ontario without fear of prosecution for years. The samne type of calamitous provincial legislation, controlling the export of' Ontario produced, diesel fuel to the U.S., has cost Ontario -taxpayers millions upon millions of dollars in lost fuel taxes - yes- millions and millions! Who knows, if that lost revenue could have been collected, maybe we could have avoided the $30 sur- charge we noss have to cougb up on our licence sticker. Maybe! sometbing could have done about the obscene diesel and gasoline taxes, that are draining the pockets of everyone. Following Wrye, Doug Lewis zip- ped down to Windsor like Zorro, ready to make bis- own mark on the blockade shemozzle. Later emerging from a tbree hour meeting witb the truckers, Lewis said, "The truckers just want a level playing field." A great political use of a literacy devise, aimed to tomn the truckers mbt a buncb of bappy campers. Perhaps the "level playing field" philosopby may make its way to othiers in government. A good start witb the "level playing field" idea might be fair deals for aIl with'pay- ing the tax burden - making food banks needless - providing lands for affordable bousing - reàl help ta workers suffering tbrough free trade - the dismantling of Caniadian traditions - recognizing every Cana- dian as a member of a distinct socie- ty. The "level playing field" idea is a good one. Wbat a shame that peo- pIe have.to block off roads, and cause factories ta close, in order ta have government even think about it.
