4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, lune 27, 1990 Happy "Sweet, Sixteen "Miche/e -Newcastle sewage plant at 80% -of capacîty Sims Hubicki held an Open House in Newcastle last week relating to plan to expand the sewer plant in the Village with, the possibility of construction in 1992. The Open House is the comple- tion of the second stage of 5 stages of an Environmental Assessment report., It was outlined that the present, plant in 1989 was operating at 80 percent capacity for the total population in Newcastle Village and Wilmot Creek of 3126 people. The capacity of the.present plant located on the lakefront is set at .4 million gallons a day. It is an- ticipated that capacity will be in- creased to .9 million to 1.2 million. It was pointed out that a .9 million capacity would be adequate. until the year 2009, with the present The Assessment also involves the possible extension of the existing plant, the construction of a new plant or connection with the sewage plant in Bowmanville. If ail the residential area in the p resent boundaries of Newcastle were to be developed it would re- quire a plant with a capacity of 1.8, million gallons per day. Step thrçe in the process will determine the site of the plant or whether expansion will be under- taken at the present plant. Upon a question at the Open House it was learned that Laidlaw is not now considering a forced sewage main from the Newtonviile area dump site to handie leachate from the dump. It was stated that Laidlaw is considering a connection with the sewage plant in Port Hope. Love Mom, Dad and Mark Letter to the Town of Newcastle Dear Mayor and Councillors, I am writing you regarding the lights at the Basebaîl field in the Orono Park. Over the last few years, the number of boys playing bail in Orono has increased dramatically and we presently have over 100 boys registered. We are proud of our Basebali Program and last year we were rewarded when our PeeWee team won the Ontario PeeWee " cD" Championship. This year, the team has moved up to the Bantamn level and this meansthe games have two and one-haif hour time limits. Since the teams come from as far away as Pickering and Belleville, the games cannme bc started before 6:30 necessitating the use of the ights for approximately one haif hour. On May 24th the team hosted Ajax and even thought the lights were turned on, the game had to be cancelled due to darkness. This pro- ved to be a rather embarrassing mo- ment for ail those associated with the team. Due to the many picnics on Safurdays and Sundays, we are unable to use the park for games on the weekends and thus we have no choice but to play during the week. The Orono Park is the nicest park in the area if flot in aIl of Ontario. l-owever, as soon as the lights are turned on, it is too dark to enjoy it's beautv let alone play a gaine of basebaîl. On their way to the Champion- shp last .year, Orono hosted teams from Georgetown, Pelham and Listowell and these visitors had nothing but praise for the Town of Newcastle regarding the condition and beauty of the Park. Had any of these teams played under the lights, lI ' sure the comments would have een totally negative. We feel it is very important to keep our boys playing sports such as basebal especially during the long summer months. However, as the boys get older, it will be increasingly difficuît to convince teams to come to Orono to play games which can- flot be completed due to inadequate and unsafe lighting. The present lights were installed by the Orono Chamber of Com- mnerce approximately 20 years ago. Although their intentions were good, the ights were inadequate for Basebali then and are even worse now. Since ail the wiring is in place, the cost of upgrading the lights (new poles and bigger lights) would be much less than the cost of the ights instalIed at Soper Creek in Bowmanville. The people of Orono have always tried to maintain and upgrade their facilities without being a burden to the taxpayers (e.g. orono Arena and Commiinity Centre which operate completely without finan- cial aid from the Town) however, even though we now have more boys playing bail than hockey, we can only ask the same people to do 50 much volunteer work and fun- draising. We would appreciate any con- sideration you could give to upgrading the lights at the Orono Park. If there is anything we can do to expedite this mater, please let us know.
