Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, JuIy 25, 1990-3 Someone has been, there before There is one tbing about a ýsmall community and that is its social fabric with the opportunity to drop in for a brief visit on a neighbour or another acquaintance in the comn- munity. Such opportunities are quite extensive and one must say en- joyable. Such was the case last week when we found ourself sitting at the pic- nic table with John and Maureen Reid in their backyard. It was a lit- tde bit of politics, kids -and a discus- sion of composting. The Reids harbour a couple of small composters in their backyard witb the possibilities of a third being constructed. They certainl1y find the system and process interesting and John estimates he bas placed some fifty bags of compostable material in the larger of the two, possibly three feet in height and four feet in diameter, "it just keeps sinking". John doesn't take composting lightly and does give it some serious thought. Design a small chipper whereby it would be possible to reduce smail limbs and woody plants to a size suitable to add to the Composter. A great idea which was to be followed through design, patent and marketing. Unfortunately they already exist as we found out visiting Bill Reid at Kirby Power Equipment just recently and tbey are for rent. New ideas are bard to come by and it is somewhat disappointîng to find out someone bas been there berore. We found that out with a great idea to write a book on attracting birds to your backyard. There seemed a lot of good reasons for the idea to, sell. After al we heard that more bird books were sold last year than bibles. We also know that a lot of these bird books are sold to backyard birders who have some interest in nature as a whole. Attracting birds through the planting of fruit and seed bearing trees, shrubs and plants would add another dimension in promoting the envirofiment, something that is in vogue at this time. 1But a check of the local library system and book stores bore out the fact that we are a little late - so- meone bas been there before. There is always the chance ho wever that there can be a better chipper and there can be a better book on attracting birds. Kendal News by P. Lowery Sorry there was no column last week, but did you ever have one of those times, when the mind just ceased to funetion. After ail the hub-bub of the parade and of preparing food, laziness set in. Let's hope this situation doesn't happen too often. I now know why our late cor- respondent, at times used exéerps from articles and books in her col- umn. In smaler cotumunities it is often bard to find something to write about, life is quiet and slower jnoving, and tbank goodness no crime or tragedies to report. This makes for a peaceful life and I would be the last person to want anything to change too much, just so there would be something to write about. Well, Sunday started out like last week, but then the suni came out and it was a lovely morning. Church lwas held at Kendai this "Fresh off theBoat" SHappy 4Oth week, with the combined congrega- tions of Shiloh, Newtonville and Kendal present. For those of us who regularly attend Kendal Church, what a delightful scene greeted us upon entering the Church. A beautiful deep rose carpet has been installed and the pews have been al cleaned and polished, the pews have been put back in with a slight siant so that now al people are facing towards the pulpit. Thé space at the front is greater and the piano bas been placed at the north side where the pianist can now see the choir when accompanying them. There is now lots of room to enter the Sun- day School room. Somehow the whole effect is to make the church appear bigger and yet the colour of the rug and the colour of the stain- ed glass windows combine to make it seem dloser and warmer. The members who worked so hard to do ail that has been done in the past four weeks, are certainly to be con- gratulated, it shows what a few, working together can do, when put their minds and will to work. We must flot forget that it was thanks to the generosîty of the late Mrs. Annie Cathcart, that the money for this project was available., When one looks around, you find that most of the beautiful material things in the church were the gifts of families in memory of their parents or purchased from bequests left by former members of the church. Tbey are no longer here taking an active part, but they can not be forgotten. The service was taken by Allan Baker, following the opening hymn and the cal to worship. The antbem was sung by a quartet of our young people, Chad Switzer, Glen Foster, April Switzer and Hope Kirksey. They sang, "It's Jesus and Me," this was enjoyed by ail. Where would we be these days without the younger members of our conygrega- tion. It was too bad there were no children present, so Allan had to tell us oldsters the children's story. He passed around two bottles of seeds and asked if we knew what kind they were. It turned out there were three kinds of grass seed in the bottles. It was impossible to tell the seeds apart. One would hâve to wait until they grew to mraturity, to tel themn apart, and one hoped there were no weed seeds in among them, but they could flot bc told apart from the grassseeds, things arecflot aiways as they seem, one must wait until maturity to see the difference, Love from #1, 2ý, 3ý, & 4 BOWMANVILLE SPOR TS SHOP ath/etic clothing, foot wear, licensedproducts, basketball, soccer, skates & hockey equiprnent. *equipment repairs* skate sharpening* 121 KING ST. Birthday wisbes to Mary Lofthouse-Martin and Berniece Stark and best wishes to Ferri and Allen Foster,, who recently celebrated their 53rd Anniversary. Allan based his sermon on "«Im- patience". He spoke of the parable in Matthew 13, verses 24-30 where seeds were sown and enemies planted weeds in among the grain. When asked by the servants if they should go out and pull out the weeds, the master told tbem to wait, that to pull the weeds would disturb the grain. No one would go out and plant weed seeds with their crops, but like evil, there aiways are weeds (Continued page 4)
