Gerhard Kennepohl, head of the miinistry's pavements and roadway office and project manager for the trail says that somne of the additives may double the price of asphait wvhich now costs between $150-$200 a tonnme. Some suppliers estimated that their particular additives wil increase thecost of pavement from 3 to 7 per cent. Cost is only one factor the ministry is investigating in the trial. It will also be monitoring how the test strips stand up to heavy truck traffic and cold weather. Trucks cause ruts in pavement and extreme codcauses cracks. "We want to improve rutting resistance and make sure low temperature resistance is not. adversely affected," says Kennépohi. The additives, used in the test strips are: Polyethylene - small white chips of polyethylene were blended with asphait cernent'. The polyethylene, cani be either'new or r-ecycled - supplied by Novophalt America Corp. Neoprene - a virgin plastic - sup- plied by DuPont Canada Inc., Vestoplast - a virgin plastic - sup- plîed by W. Schutz KG of West Germany.* Engineered Bitumen - supplied by Petro Canada.' Tire Rubber - supplied by Rouse Rubber Industries Inc. Rouse, a U.S. company, added powdered rubber to the asphalt, after the remnoval of metal and fiber from the t ires. Ail the mixtures used have been modified to show resuits in two to three years, sînce most pavements b lasts from 15 to 20 years. The d- ministry will measure the test strîps *d four times a year for rutting and id cracks with an electronic computer on an automatic road grader and - other equipment. The trial on Highway 400 is the largest one the ministry has under- - taken. They are also testing dif- ferent polymers near Port Hope on Highway 401. JOB PRINTUNG ai the Orono Times 98.3-5301 Gofrd's View What about our "Downtown" by Gord Milîs On the Satuirday before the Civic Holiday, Orono D.B.1.A. throughi Sylvia Parker, promnoted a "Speaker's Corner" to commence at 1:30 p.m. on the Town Hall steps. The idea behind the event is a "take-off" of the Speakers Corner held every weekend in Hyde Park, London, England. If you have ever had. the chance or ever get the chance, to take the "real corner" in, it's an, event you wiIl not easily forget - ask me sometime. It really doesn't matter if the event is held in London or Orono, it provides an outlet for emotions, it lets others know how you feel about things, i's great fun to watch and to participate in, and above aIl it adds a touch of character to the sur-, roundings. That is what the Orono D.B.I.A. is trying to do with Our downtown - add a touch of character in an attempt to regain public interest. Why then, didn't anyone show up? Are they on the wrong track? While shopping maIls and select shopping plazas are being duplicated in every city and along every highway in Ontario, our downtown mnerchants are struggling to find ways to recapture the public's interest. W Mhile our downtown core hasn't exactly faded away, -it has at least, lost part of its focus. No doubt somne people have been wringing their hands over the demise of downto.wn vibrancy, and want to blamne it aIl on a lack of creativity and commitment, almnost like blamning the garment industry for continuing to make two armed shirts. Downtown Orono has the potential to become better, and the essence of the village is in its people. The crucial issue then is how to generate more interest s0 that we do not end up with more vacant stores and less and less people. Let the Orono D.B.I.A. have your ideas on improvements, speak to Sylvia Parker or Write to the Orono Times about them..
