4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 29, 1990 Eltection Forum '90 The Orono Times has allotted this space to the candidates in'the Durham EastRiding to put forth their platform and views of the issues in the Ontario Provincial election. Junior Gardeners Sum merOuting TIM CROOKALL The Family Coalition Party Dear Voters, Are you dissatisfied with the three traditional political parties? 1 arn. 1 didn't feel good about voting until 1 discovered The Farnily Coali- tion Party. 1 was impressed with the integrity and the policies of the par- ty. The FCP is Ontario's fourth largest party with 68 candidates runnîng in the election. 1 was selected as the candidate for Durham East. Taxpayers money should be treated with respect. We are com- mitted to honest, responsible goveriment. The provincial deficit must bc cut and eventually eliminated. We would reduce govertiment size without eliminating essential services. The values that we teach our children today wîll determine the kind of Ontario we will have tomor- row. The work ethic must be fostered. Our schools should pro- mote responsibility and a commit- ment to excellence. We believe in responsible free enterprise for a strong economy. Small business must be protected from unfair practices such as price fixing. C-operation between employees and management must be encouragedý. The FCP does not receive funding from big business or trade unions. The environment must be pro- tected. Financial tics with big business'has kept the Liberls from getting tough with polluters. Gar- bage production must be reduced while recycling and reuse should be increased. Those who break pollu- tion laws deserve to be prosecuted. The FCP is pro-family. We op- pose abortion and wide open Sunt- day shopping. We believe that a strong province is made up of strong faiies. Sincerely, Tim Crookaîl KIRK KEMP The New Ontario Progressive Conservative Party An Open Letter to the People of Durham East My naine is Kirk Kemp and 1 arn seeking election on September 6th, on behaif of the New Ontario Pro- gressive Conservative Party, to represent the people of Durham East at Queen's Park. I was born, educated and mnar- ried, and have raised my family in Durham East. 1 have successfully carried on business as an apple grower in this riding. I -have been active as a service club memtber, church-goer, and amateur athlete in this community. In short, 1 arn your neighbour. My decision to seek to represent the people of ihis riding in the pro- vincial legislature wasflot under- taken lightly. 1 amn, however, con- cerned about the actions of Premier David Peterson and the Liberal par- ty, and the impact on the riding of Durham East, the province, and even the country as a whole:, - The premier has called an'election claiming a need for a new mandate -pure political opportunism; the cost? $40 million. - The Liberal government has raised taxes thirty-three times, increasing tax revenues by 132%. - The Liberals' no-fault insurance plan provides a loss of benefits along with sky-rocketing prem iums. - The Liberals have permitted a loss of 2,000 hospital beds. Heart pa- tients are dying as a direct result of this government's neglect. - Under-funding of provincial school boards impacts on the pro- perty taxes you pay. These issues concerfi me because GORD MILLS New Densocratic Party Why should you elect Gord Milîs on September 6th? This election is about choosing sides. You the voter have to decide who will be on your side when it cornes to important issues facing you and your family. New Democrats believe that peo- ple matter more than the powerful private interests. For the last 45 years, both the Tories and the Liberals have dorninated the agenda of this pro- vince. They continue to defend the standards that make a fair Ontario unachievable. New Democrats, will make the tough choices when it cornes to the envirofiment. We'Il crack down on the big polluters, and make thern cdean up their act. We'Il give you, the citizens, rights to stop pollution under our En- vironmient Bill of Rights. It's also tirne we got our priorities straight when it cornes to taxes. Companies that are profitable, and people who are weathy, should pay their fair share. It's that simple. -Since 1985 the Liberals have in- creased taxes by 132 per cent. We think you've hadt enough of this reckless gouging. The Liberals, in a pre-election ploy, have promised to reduce sales tax by 1 per cent. This is a shameless show of audacity directed to Ontarians. 1We ail have a distinct choice in this election. You choose the side you want to be on. On September 6, send Gord Milîs to Queen's Park as your, Durham East representative. His experiences in life, together wth his honesty and ability to relate to people, is worth voting for. Gord Mils MARILYN PEARCE Durhami East Liberal Association The voters of Durham East have a very important decision to make on September 6th. They must decide who best represents their ideas, their values and their future. As your representative rny first comrnitrnent would be to the residients of this riding. I've got a public record that people can look at and from that determine if I'm honest, straîght forward and hard- working. 1 think it's imperative to keep in touch with the grass-roots and 1 have the confidence and strength if elected. The qualîty of life in Durham East will be under considerable pressure in the next 4 years. The probleins we are encountering now did not occur over night. The pollu- tion problems of today are a result of a lack of control over the past 30 years. The transportation problems of today are a result of a lack of ef- fective planning 20 years ago and the education funding and capital shortfalls are examples of cut-backs in the early eighties when planners foresaw record numbers in our schools but governments were afraid to make the necessary fun- ding changes. If you support me on the "16th" 1 will be an energetîc representative who will bring a common-sense, "back to basics" philosophy to the government and attempt to find solutions to today's probleins while putting in place the controls to pro- tect us over the next decade. 1 grew up in Durhamn East, and have ived here mnost of my life and if'asked why l'm 'running 1 would say '«I care about cour future." Marilyn Pearce they threaten the political and financial security of Durham East, Ontario and Canada. Yours very truly, Kirk Kemp On the warrn sunny day of July l7th, the Junior Gardeners visited the IOth Anniversary of Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village. The children thoroughly enjoyed strolling through the beautifully landscaped - rnanicured grounds gazing at the gorgeous flowers and realistic setups.
