Gord's View A matter of Li*fe or Dea, Everyone in our area has been stunned by the news that Orono could be the host of a regional land- fI site, that will provide the needs for regional garbage disposai for the next 40 years. We are facing a garbage crisis unprecedented in the historyof Ontario. We are 'going to need leadership to confront that crisis. AIl of us have been living on bor- rowed time. We have expected others that folio w us to clear up our mess. Part of Our problem as a society, goes back to our ideas that it iÈ our right to do whatever we want, with our land we still live with that idea. We have had the assertion now, for a long time, that we as human beings, are aIl separate from the overaîl problems facing the en- vironment, and entitled to do anything we wish. A new philosophy must emerge, where we understand that what we are doing to Our environment, we are doing to ourselves. Like you, 1 feel a bit daunted by the size of the problema now. We are starting to fear the consequences to our childrern and grandchildren if we fail. The most encouraging signs is that people everywhere are beginin- ing to confront the issues at hand. lt's nut going to be easy, but human ingenuity is remarkable. Faced with the real danger to our environment necessity does become, the mother of invention. We will aIl have to make crucial decisions. For some it will mean using washable diapers. It will mean composting our table scraps, and reducing Our garbage by over one haif. Recycling must be, our own personal goal. We can choose things like recycled paper, we can refuse things wrapped or prepared for sale, in plastic. Wve must use our own shopping bags and refuse paper or plastic bags. We must make our feelings known, persisting that others be like us. We must make our concerns about the environment fashionable and taikeci about. We must get through to peo- pIe that if we ignore the issues of the environmient . it could mean our demise. Alil of uis must feel uneasy aithtîe cour se we have been taking over re- cent years. The eneouraging signs is that peopfle are beginnfing to con- ft'l01 the issues, individually. Ir, the last war, I remember being told thlat we would have to do without lights out on the streets after dark. How could we ail manage? Wouldn't there be beatings and robberies. How would we be able to find our way about? We,' faeed that issue as a tact of war Schmidt's Law: If YOu mess with a thing long enough, it'll break. Law of Computer Programnming: Adding manpower to a laie soft- ware project, makes it later. Murphy: When a man laughs at his misfor- t unes, he loses a great many friends. They neyer forgive the loss of their perogative. Maier's Law: If the facts do not eonform to the theory, they must be disposed of. Witten's Law- Whertever you eut your finger- natîs, You will find a need of them an hour later. -of life or death. Our environment and the saving of il, is war also. It too is a matter of life or death. It is going to be a great challenge to alI of us, a challenge we should face together' regardless of aniy political stripe. It is a war we must win. Those that are to follow,.are depending upon each' ot us to make the saving of the en- vironment of our own personal responsibility. (With thoughts from "The Earth in Baance" - CBC documentary).
