Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 26, 1990-7 Q NewtonvilleAlive by Peggy Mullan This past election has been drawn out, fought and argued, contested, analyzed and glorified just about to the limit. It is time to get on with business at hand. There are numerous issues, ex- isting and brewing that the NDP government has to deal with. I feel it is important that our local politicians get out into the com- munities and be known, and not forget how they got there in the first place. As far as Mr. Mills' attack on me in last week's Orono Time, I main- tain that overall, the NDP got in because thousands and thousands of Canadians across the country were grossly fed up with the Liberals (Peterson) and the Conser- vatives (Mulroney) and not in love with the New Democrats. Yes, the NDP just might deserve their chance for Canada. But to stew about how an election was won or juggle the obvious is not very professional or complimentary. Don't take it so personally... Thank you for your comments on last week's column about losing a loved one and the essence of life. During the last couple of years writing this column, I have had my share of abuse. Some justified, some not. It's been more than once I've asked myself "why I am doing this?" and l'Il just call it quits. Sometimes I think I'm a tad naive for my age, flabbergasted when I learn that all people are not honest and up front; some, downright nas- ty. It's almost uncanny... whenever I get that throw-in-the-towel-urge so- meone will call to get in a scoop, or someone else will get a holtl of me to chat perhaps to disagree, but nevertheless being up front and pleasant. ....and it is great. Little Scoops... - About 58 guests attended the Royal Doulton display and film East Wing Officially opened . (Continued from page 5) The Long ierm Lare unit is located on the first and second floor. Improvements of spacious rooms, wheelchair level windows, warm tone colours and a home type environment will benefit these pa- tients greatly. Special rooms and utensils are supplied for stroke vic- tims to aid in earlier recovery. The philosophy is "The quicker the rehabilitaion to adjust at home the sooner the discharge". The new pharmacy is located in the basement and over twice the size of the old unit. Mr. Fred Tippins described one of the highlights, a new computerized drug unit. The unit can only be accessed after hours by a key held by special staff. When the key is inserted the time and person are identified and a single dosage is dispensed. Of course a state-of-the-art security system is attached. A special vault now stores ail narcotic drugs also connected to the alarm system. Overall the new "East Wing" is up to date with modern technology and is there to serve you, Dr. Westgarth, Chief of Staff said that renovations to the old wing still have to be done. He stressed "This is not the end but only the half way point to a complete futuristic health unit and hopes that the sup- port and monetary assistance will continue from the community." norial remains a community Yital serving a rapidly growing area. presentation last Wednesday even- ing, September 19 at the Church. Winner of the exquisite Doulton figurine was Mrs. Sharon Reighley of Port Hope. Thanks to the U.C.W. for arranging this event; many who wanted to attend were unable due to previous com- mitments, such as The Pines Public School Open House and Guides and Brownies. Perhaps another Royal Doulton presentation could be arranged in the future. - As September winds down, please remember that Big Brother month is still on. A drawing and colouring contest is underway. Kids can pick up colouring sheets at our Newton- ville corner store, in Newcastle and throughout Orono. Hope you'll get in on it! - Newtonville Public School has begun a fundraising campaign within the community. Students will be about town, strictly on a volunteer basis, offering a number of items from a small catalogue for purchase. Money will be collected upon delivery. Parents are remind- ed that forms must be in October 9th. - Euchre results of last Friday were: Betty Walsh, Gladys Greenwood and Bert Stapleton on the draws; ladies high score was 93 for Audrey Graham, with Bill Graham getting the high men's with an 87. Other top numbers from Kay Battersby with 78, Rene Wright 78, Net Gor- don 78 and Jean Allin 75. There wre ten and a half tables. All welcome always! - Don't undermind the importance of getting your chimney cleaned. Call your local Sweep and set up an appointment as soon as possible if you are burning wood. It will give you peace of mind and that security of burning safe. Here we are again, closing out another month. As October blows in, we are so clearly reminded that autumn has arrived, and with it changing of leaves, the donning of sweaters and probably a fire in the evenings and mornings, just to take the chill off. I hope that everyone will give some thought to next spring's garden. October is the prime month to plant trees, shrubs and bulbs - even grass seed. Take it all in and enjoy...don't hide ip the bouse too early in the season; it is a long, sometimes over- ly miserable winter 'round these parts. always happy to hear from you. Call me at 786-2964, or drop a line to Box 104, Newtonville. Thanks! Everyone wants to meet with Bob Rae Just about everyone wants to provide information and sugges- tions for the newly formed Bob Rae NDP governiment in Ontario. The regional health committee is to prepare a list of issues and sug- gestions for the new government while the Toronto-Peterborough passenger rail association has writ- ten Rae asking for a meeting to get going on a GO service along the line recently vacated by VIA rail. The Nuclear Awareness Project committee wants a review of the 25 year Ontario Hydro plan which likely would add further nuclear generating stations in this area. The committee suggests nuclear not be a mainstay of generation in the province and wants Rae to take action that would follow their line of thought. Clarke High @.ot Sehool "The Future Starts Here" From the Principal's Desk: Last week the Vice-Principal, Mr. Russell, and I met with three other high school Principals and Superintendents of Education to discuss the de-streaming in Grade 9. This is a change that will be coming to Clarke High School probably in 1993. Changes are coming in education to meet the needs of the students as they face the 21st century. It seems difficult to visualize but many of the students starting high school in the next years will not be fully train- ed for their professions before the year 2001. It is very important as Principals and Vice-Principals we plan very carefully for the changes in education. Through Clarke High News I will keep you informed of the upcoming changes in education. Student Council Say cheese! Yes, the ever-so- patient photogràpher was in last Friday shooting close to 500 students. Don't worry folks! He'Il be out in a couple of weeks with bail. (Bundumpa!) Friday was also the night for foot stomping fun at our first dance of the year. But wait, there's more! Could you believe it? Clarke High School is of fering not 1, not 2, but 3 different styles of jackets this year! (ohhhhh, ahhhhh) We have the ever so chic leather; the sporty ski jacket; and the classical wool??? with leather sleeves. Orders, along with a down payment, will be taken this Friday, and only this Friday. Now for the moment you've all been waiting for the results to last week's question, "Are baggy pants and baseball caps really in style?" Unfortunately, one of our operators were wearing his baggy pants on Friday and subse- quently tripped over them, knock- ing out our phone system. Now that it's fixed, we can have the next question. Does Clarke deserve/want its own cheerleading team? (ie. Dallas Cowboys) YES - YOU-BET or NO - YAR- IGHT Music Notes The first Band Parent Meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m. The Senior Band will be holding a "Car Wash" at the Orono IGA from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. this Saturday. We'll wash your car while you do your shopping! Boys Volleybal The Junior and Senior boys teams were inactive this past week as far as tournaments and games are concerned but they have been prac- tising very hard during this time. Both teams begin league play this week. The Juniors played on Tues- day at Cobourg West while the Seniors play today at Cobourg East. The Seniors will also be travelling to Dunbarton High School in Pickering this Saturday to compete against:Toronto area schools. The Senior team will be playing at Clarke next Wednesday afternoon. Spectators are welcome and would be appreciated. So come out and enjoy the game. The Yearbook by Lori Wood, Editor The yearbook of 90/91 will be one to remember. I know this when I felt the enthusiasm from the year- book staff at our first meeting last Wednesday. Students will be receiving their 90/91 yearbook in September when they return to school in 1991. This allows the yearbook to cover September 1990 through to June 1991. The graduating students of 1991 will receive their yearbooks at commencement in October 1991. Producing a yearbook requires considerable time, money and hard work and I know the yearbook staff will make Invictus 90/91 a creation the students at Clarke will be very excited about. Student Services The peer counsellors are all work- ing really hard and are doing a great job so far. They came out and were very helpful on Grade 9 Parents Night. Here is our peer counsellor of the week: Hi! My name is Jennifer Childs. I am 15 years old and I live in Kendal. I have three younger sisters and in my spare time I like to read and write poetry, and spend time with my friends. Last semester here at Clarke, I played the flute in the In- termediate Band. This year I am looking forward to being a peer counsellor because I arn comfor- table talking and listening to others and I feel that it is worth the time to help or even just listen to people when they need it most Jo-elen Sportswear 102 Queen Street, Bowmanville 623-8161 MOVING UPTOWN SALE Up to 50% OFF in giftware items Stocking Stuffers Caress Pets - Stuffed Animais Brass, Ceramic Houses Native indian Reproductions Sale runs until October 12th At CIBC, we're makingyour banking more convement Effective Monday, October 1, 1990, the CIBC branch at 5284 Main St., Orono, Ontario wilI extend its hours: Monday-Wednesday 9:30 - 4:00 Thursday-Friday 9:30 - 6:00 Manager Donna Douglas and her staff, are proud to serve you.
